Hi all my son has been working part time as a waiter since leaving school at 16 while getting a level 2 ncfe in gym Instructing. However after turning 18 he spiraled and developed an eating disorder which took him a year to recover from and no longer feels like he can go down that path. He's tried a hgv mechanic apprenticeship however that did not last long due to him not being very co ordinated and struggling with manual work. He's came to me and said he feels unsure of himself and feels like a failure seeing all of his friends progress (e.g going uni or finishing apprenticeships) while he's stuck clearing tables. Any suggestions for him, he's skilled with people and is smart when he applies himself.

Hi I also have a 20 yr old DS and this resonates with me. Mine is also waiting tables in a hotel while apparently doing a cyber security course locally but doesn't often attend.

Anything I say seems to be taken as criticism so it isn't easy.

What about having a career advisor chat with your son maybe through a local college or jobcentre or some online perhaps.

It sounds like he has some transferrable skills and is good with people and working as part of a team for example

I feel for you both. Me and my son have been there.

I've posted on another couple of threads before about this but my son was feeling lost after trying and quitting uni last year... In January this year he completed a course through the King's Trust, called the Teams course and it has done wonders for him.

Teams course sounds good

I wonder about something like working for the NHS as a paramedic or something like that perhaps.

What about an apprenticeship in hospitality. He already knows he is comfortable around people. He can provide good service. That he has already proven himself in and expand into the industry
