Flexible working request - too soon?

I started a new job earlier this year and passed my probation period a couple of weeks ago. Manager seems really happy with my work. My previous job was part time (80%) and I'd really like to get back to those hours ideally. Is it too soon to make a flexible working request?

At the risk of drip feeding, I intend to retire at the end of next year. So part of me is thinking I just stick it out full time for another year and save as much money as possible. I'm 56. But maybe I could keep going a bit longer on a 4 day week.

Might be worth looking into compressed hours then?

My former boss in her 60s did compressed hours and had Friday off. When I put my working request in, i had to have any day off except friday as so many other people already had it off. Loads of people do it op so you should be fine.

Well it’s taking the piss a bit isn’t it? You knowingly took the role on at full time hours …the minute you pass probation you want to reduce hours by 20%….. doesn’t exactly make hiring women sound a good idea does it

What rubbish. Working fewer hours doesn’t mean a women is less valuable than a man.

I was recruited into my current company the same time as a man. I was able to perform the same job as him on 1 day less and he really struggled with the job and quit.

I work 37 hours a week compressed into 4 days, 3 days 8am - 6pm and 1 day 8am -5pm. It's really not that bad although I highly recommend taking Wednesday as your day off - only ever working 2 days in a row before you get a day off is wonderful.

OP I only have to work 8-4.45 with a half hour lunch to get 1 day a fortnight off (37 hours) that could be a good compromise to keep your pay. And as I WFH I don’t have a commute so doesn’t feel too much at all, but appreciate if you have a commute it’s harder to work a longer day.
