Being a postman/woman

Has anyone experience of this and know what the hours and pay are like?

I am very much an early riser and enjoy walking so wondered if this might be a good option for me?

thanks.

There was someone posting on 'going back to work' about going back as a postwoman (postperson?!), maybe try posting on there?

I opened the door this morning in DP's skanky dressing gown to the most handsome postman in the world, in his postman shorts. I nearly died.

My friend's dh is a postie as was my old school pal. She was stil out delivering when she was 8 mths pg, lol!

They both seemed to like it. They are always looking for temporary staff - might be a way in?

Btw, friend's dh starts at 5 and finishes at 2.30 ish.

I used to be a postie BC.The main bonus of the job is getting fit and being paid for it!

You need to be able to ride a bicycle and be fit and healthy-also you can't be fussy over your hair looking good as being out in the rain for several hours leaves you looking like a drowned rat on a regular basis!

Being flexible is also needed as you could get put on a round with no help and no idea of where places are-I used to badger people to get info!

The work is male dominated and there's a lot of banter-GSOH definitely needed!

I couldn't do it now but I miss being out on a round and getting fresh air-beats being stuck in an office with a tiny window and air con drying out your skin!

The downside is that you get grief off people for management's decisions as you're in the front-line,the shifts are being changed and the rounds are getting bigger in some areas.

My exh is a postie-if you need to know anything,I can try to find out.

Hey ho branflake!

I used to be a postie and LOVED it. I was a delivery one, not one stuck in the sorting office. There are different roles in the postoffice so be sure to know what you want to do before you apply or if you are unsure, ring your local delivery office they will help you.

I worked 4.30am til 2.00pm or there abouts 6 days a week and then qualilfied as a driver too, but left due to not being able to secure a 5 day week, the 6 mornings nearly killed my social life and my hubby had had enough of me falling asleep in my dinner.

But that said I loved being out and meeting people, most are very friendly and you are basically your own boss once out of the delivery office. I loved the banter between posties and they all look out for each other, well they did for me.

The rates of pay are basic, but there are benefits from the POIS who will visit your office to set up bonds etc for you.

Go for it and get a free workout every morning!

In two years I was assalted by a dirty ole man, sounds worse than it was, and an Alsatian took a dislike to me and knocked me to the floor! I was unhurt just shook up and this was a mistake on the owners part who didnt realise I was early and the dog was loose in the garden.

But go for it and get a free workout every morning, it was great and I miss it to be honest, if I had been able to get a 5 day week i would still be doing it.

Good luck

Thanks all for your replies

Must admit, I hadn't thought about the dog aspect. I hate dogs!

Not bothered about my hair at all!

Only concern would be working six days a week rather than five - is that the norm?
