Line management

I am soon going to start a new job, having taken some time out of work recently, and I am looking to start preparing mentally. I worked at my previous job for a long time so moving is a big change. Would people be able to recommend any books on how to manage people well please? I have some experience but would like to make sure I have a good grasp of the most important points in order to start on the right foot. Many thanks.

I would ask HR if they have any courses when you are there. Line management can be tough if you’re in work for yourself. I took my authentic self to work, was guided by the team and listened - A LOT. Make sure you move one to ones to the same week if you have a clash. Nothing more annoying than a manager making themselves to be so busy that they don’t have time for the team. If there’s feedback give it in a timely fashion, give then the context and be straight talking and work through what they’d do differently next time. If you don’t gel with someone ask if you’re the right fit for them as a manager! I had a great manager who was amazing and then they left and was replaced by a younger person who clearly was out for herself! Such a yes person, caused chaos, never had your back and then made me redundant. Worse manager ever as she couldn’t even handle that properly!

The best manager I had, had no previous experience but confessed to using this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Management-Dummies-Richard-Pettinger/dp/0470977698

My advice:

  • regular 1:2:1s
  • constructive feedback
  • listening to what they say
  • clear objectives.

@Wishiwasonabeachinmaldives and @Harassedevictee thank you so much for your suggestions and I will buy the book and work through it! Completely agree on how and when to give feedback (clearly and in a timely way!), listening, regular 121s and clear objectives. The technical aspects of the job dont concern me but I really want to work on line managing well.
