New job asked me to complete online training before start date but not paying me in full - is this normal?

I recently got a new job and before my start date I was asked to complete mandatory online training. I was told I would be paid. The online training consisted of 15 online interactive courses each lasting about one hour (and indicating time estimate on each one).

After I started employment I was told I would only be paid 3.5 hours for everything even though it tool me around 15 hours.

I have listed all the courses and printed my certificates but they have said they are not going to pay me the full time as it was a mandatory requirement before starting the post.

Do you have it writing they were going to pay? Why are they deciding that 3.5 hours for 15 hours is right? The time is either paid or not I would of thought.

seems to be a big red flag and times that are to come with them

@Emsie1987 , I don't have it in writing unfortunately, just was told verbally I would be paid.

I have shown them my certificates and notes that I made but they said some people don't do the courses properly and just skip through the content. Well, I didn't! I did the courses properly. I wasn't even employed then either.

It seems a bit dodgy.

Yeah it does. Do they have a high turnover of staff in the role?

mechanicalpencil · 12/10/2025 21:40

@Emsie1987
yes!

This would be a massive red flag to me!

SpigTheFish · 12/10/2025 21:45

Massive red flag. This should be done in induction.

What the hell were the courses?

doreuol · 12/10/2025 21:46

Let me guess …care sector by any chance?!

mechanicalpencil · 12/10/2025 21:53

Yes, that’s what I thought -that they should have been done in induction, but they made it sound like it was a normal thing.

Education sector.
