Love the job but it is very challenging at times, and can be isolating working solo!
Any other EOTAS Tutors out there? 👋

I'm a therapeutic mentor for a an alternative provision we have both tutors and mentors. Incredibly lonely with some clients. My latest one is a 2:1 and it's making a huge difference to my work day! Keep going you're making such a difference

@Ragingoverlife Thank you so much for your kind words. I am currently teaching a lot of LAC with really significant additonal MH needs and although this is my absolute dream job, I sometimes feel like nothing I do is going to be helpful to them because understandly learning is incredibly hard for them to engage in. It feels so lonely at times becuase not many people "get it"?

Yes being able to bounce back thoughts, give the child another sounding board is useful. We have a group session which our people attend with their tutor/mentor which they find helpful does your company offer anything like this?

everychildmatters · 09/10/2025 09:20

@Ragingoverlife Absolutely nothing; we work in total isolation. I'm not the most confident of teachers (despite over 20 years of experience including with SEND) so then I go into a spiral of "What if I'm not doing this right?", especially when the students are not in a place to engage (which naturally happens very often). It just feels very lonely at times.
Your job sounds brilliant - how did you get into it? ❤️

I worked as a direct Payments Personal Assistant and then needed more work put myself on local FB page and they reached out and said I was what they were looking for they pay well (I'm only a qualified TA so tutors get more) but I love it i have times without work though when my young people go to new provisions. But it all balances out:)

If you don't mind me butting in, I don't do this currently, but I am looking into starting it. (I currently teach in a mainstream school.) Would you recommend it overall?

everychildmatters · 19/10/2025 14:11

@Brimstonebutterfly I absolutely love it, and love the children I work with, although it isn't for everyone. Obviously the students need a lot of support, especially from a SEMH pov, as they have often not been in school for prolonged periods of time and unable to currently access mainstream. They all have an EHCP. I work with a high proportion of LAC (this is my passion), often in care homes etc. You will need a huge amount of patience and resilience.
Work-life balance good; I do on average about 1-2 hrs at home per night on report write-ups and planning. Better than teaching for sure! My direct teaching hours are currently 9.30 - 12 then 1 - 3.30 so I do my additional around that.
Biggest drawbacks are no holiday or sick pay insofar as it's similar to being self-employed. And pay not really equivalent to teaching scales. It can also feel very isolating as no colleagues.

Thank you! That's really good to know! 🙂 What subjects do you cover? How many children do you usually teach a week? It does really sound like something I would enjoy.

I've just started doing EOTAS work.I enjoy the high degree of and opportunity to personalise though trying to ensure I don't spend more time travelling than teaching!
