Dilemma, can you advise!

Enjoy my job, but not progressing, asked at 1:1 with line manager about promotion and progression, they are creating a “pathway” with targets to meet etc.
Saying this for over a year.
Looking at comparable roles, next level up, I’m doing over and above the requirements in my current role.

Approached by a recruiter for a similar position with a pay rise and level up.
Interviewed today, went well. Don’t know if I will get it.

What do I speak to my manager and say that I’m being recruited to see if that makes a difference?
Or just move on?

Wait and see what outcome you get from this role.

I'd wait until you're offered the job.
Then you're in a much better bargaining position.

Have you been in this position?
How did it go if you don’t mind sharing?

No, I haven't.
But I don't think that'll motivate your current boss, you'll get the same wishy washy "pathway, targets" etc that you've had dangled in front of you to keep you sweet, for over a year.
Personally, I'd accept the new job if offered it.
I'd then let my old boss know, once I had my contract for the new position.
It sounds like the progression and promotion that've been mentioned, will fail to materialise.

You need to wait to see if you are offered the job first. Then hand your notice in if it meets your needs.

Often the only way to progress is to leave. The negotiation is 'I'd need X plus a 15-20% increase in pay to make it worth my while'.

Never tell your current employer you are interviewing for other roles. There will be less chance of a progression plan if you do and you may not get an alternative job.
Good luck!

You'll arguably be in a worse position if you mention it your manager now and then don't get the other job as they will know you are looking elsewhere and be even less inclined than they seem to have been already to set up this pathway they have been alluding to for over a year. I think you need to draw the line yourself and say: "If they don't set up this pathway by the end of the year then I will actively look to live the company and progress elsewhere" and then get really serious about your job hunt.

Zempy · 08/10/2025 16:39

Just leave.

Floweryfrock23 · 08/10/2025 17:16

Great advice.
Thank you everyone.

Its all based on nothing as I may not even get the new role.

Keep myself to myself and crack onwards. Nothing to loose!

Yes 100% don’t say anything until you hear the outcome.
I know this sounds too simple but then, depending on the offer and if it’s decent you need to fundamentally decide which job you want (which is sometimes hard to do until you have 2 concrete offers in front of you so I wouldn’t overthink the situation until then)

Only give your notice in with the intention of leaving. Ie that you have made the decision the new one is the right one for you and you are prepare to leave your current one behind.
If you give your notice in hoping they will magic up the targets/ objectives and money that the new one offers then you may be left disappointed.

Even if they do, then a certain element of trust with your current employer will be lost and a lot of promises don’t happen anyway. It might happen or or might not. It’s flattering if it does but often it’s also got their own interests at heart too (cost of replacing / training/ you know the job etc)

Good luck with the news.

No employer is going to give you a better deal if you march in there saying you have a better offer elsewhere. They won’t like it, they will see you as someone looking to leave and will thereafter see you as someone whose time at the company is pretty much over. No one is so important that they can’t be replaced. If you get the job either take it or don’t but please don’t try and use it as a bargaining tool.

Floweryfrock23 · 08/10/2025 18:18

As I said, it’s all just floating around in my thoughts, but until I get any solid offer, I’m keeping myself to myself and carrying on.
