Looking into more flexible work options as my youngest needs me around more.
Teaching English as a Foreign Language looks doable. Was wondering if anyone could offer any advice if they have done/do this, in terms of is it actually feasible to make an income from? How hard did you find the course? Which online course is the best? Etc.
Just your general experience really, to try and understand better if it’s a viable pathway for me.

I have some experience in this but quite a long time ago and not on line.

I did a Celta qualification which was quite easy - it only takes a month. I then worked teaching English in Spain, Australia and the UK in a mixture of language schools and private business clients. The business clients were more lucrative as they pay by the hour but you normally need to go through a language school to source them. It was pretty low income - I earned enough to live on but wouldn't have been able to save anything.
In my year doing it in the UK, I think I earned in the region of £15k. Also you generally had to be available when the business people were free so in an average day, I would do an early class at say 7.30-9, a lunch class from 12.30-2 and an evening class from 5.30-7. But I often wouldn't get that many hours in a day. Teaching at schools is more day time hours but you generally get paid less per hour.

A friend of mine is a certified Spanish language teacher. He says the challenges to making a living are: You either have to have your own website and market it (time consuming and needs expertise) or you have to use a platform (e.g. like preply), platforms take quite a cut (plus with some of them you have to give a free lesson to first time users. You can use chatgpt to make a summary of the platforms, options and costs for you. The time you need to be available - people are very fickle and if you can't do the time they want (even when they keep changing it) then they go elsewhere.
