Is this worth it?

I'm unable to return to work full time as I was a postwoman and I can't do the the hours (6am start)

I can go back part time, 8am - 2pm, but after I've taken out the cost of childcare my pay would be about £110 a week.

Is it worth doing working hours for that much pay?

Why you can't start 6am? My DH does morning duties, so I can start at 7am and finishing at 2:30, so I can still get full time salary with not full time childcare. Can't you DH help in the morning with "baby"duties? or is he starting early as well?

learningallthetime · 04/06/2008 22:47

He's a postman as well ceciC so does 6am start

Well that answers my question, but I would still take the job. As everybody has said, the hours are brilliant for when kids start school, and £110 a week is good money. And well for me better than night sifts or working weekends.
And at the end of the day, if it doesn't work, you can change jobs.
I hope everything tunrs out the way you want. Good luck!

My dh is actully paying for me to go to work
As others say there's the school friendly hours etc as well

learningallthetime · 04/06/2008 23:26

Do you mean your dh wages pay for the childcare so you can work 1dilemma?

Why do people think that paying for childcare while they work is "paying to go to work"

Children aren't free

learningallthetime · 05/06/2008 13:49

cammelia I don't really understand your post.

You have to calculate how much you will haave left after childcare because
if you earn £120 a week and childcare costs £120 a week, then financially its not worth returnig to work.

And children aren't free, but looking after them yourself at home is. Childcare is not.

I just see paid childcare as one of the factors involved in what one pays to go to work.

Another one might be buying a car or work clothes or a season train ticket.

Unless you're actually making a loss then it surely is "worth" going to work if you want to earn some money. £440 per month isn't nothing.

Unless you don't want to go to work at all and prefer to look after your child yourself, that is. But that's a different argument.

learningallthetime · 06/06/2008 19:23

I see what you mean, the other option though is to work different shifts to dh, then childcare costs wouldn't be an issue.

So the question is, should I pay chilcare costs and earn £440 a month, or work different shifts and bring home more.

Hi again,
In my opinion, I rather take home £440 a month than work nights or weekends, as then you all can have family life together, that of course if you can manage with £440. If you need to earn more, then is another matter. For me, I like spending weekends the 4 of us. I have friends that have weekends jobs, to save childcare, but I don't think I would like it. I think the best to do is "do" list of the pro/con of working as a postwoman with the hours and pay on offer, or any other job, weekend/nights. Your priorities in life may be very different to other people, not for that less important. What is important for some people, may not be for others.
