No pay rise unless I agree to increased notice period

Hi all,

I am in a junior role at my company. Been here just under two years.

After some negotiations they have offered me a pay rise conditional on accepting a three month notice period, up from 1 month.

No one else in a junior role has a three month notice but the pay would put me above what is typical.

Is this a fair deal and would you agree? Seems a long time for a junior role. Worried I might regret it down the line.

If you were getting promoted it would seem more reasonable. That said, if you ended up in a redundancy situation, they'd have to pay you 3 months in lieu of notice, so I guess it works both ways.

It’s not unreasonable once you start becoming more senior; the only “watch out” is if you were to leave would your next employer likely be expecting you to only be on one month’s notice? In my industry 3 months is the norm.

You can negotiate out of a notice period at the end of employment when you want to resign. But you can't really negotiate additional notice / pay when being made redundant or being sacked.
I think it shows that the company want to retain you and value you so that is a good thing. Most mid-senior roles are 3 months notice, higher up 6 months.

I would take this as a sign that you’re useful and they want to retain you. It isn’t unusual to link a seniority / pay increase to notice periods.

Most notice periods are somewhat negotiable when it comes to it and it offers you more protection /££ if the worst were to happen

If it's a decent pay rise then I would consider it, but slightly above the cost of living I wouldn't. It's worth considering that you might be valuable to them, you might be worth more to them than they are paying out even with the pay rise which is why they want to have barriers to you leaving. Check out the job market to see if you would gain more by moving.
