What questions would you ask a County Council councillor at the end of your admin job interview?

Hi all.

At the end of an (admin job) interview I will have the opportunity to meet some current councillors. Any clues on what I should ask?? Really have no idea - I don't know who they will be so can't research!

OP posts:

Will this be part of the interview?

topcat2014 · 04/10/2025 14:36

Ask them what made them think about getting involved in local politics? Most people like talking about themselves

Curledup14 · 04/10/2025 14:41

What issues are they particularly passionate about?

HannahHamptonsGloves · 04/10/2025 14:47

Great suggestions from @topcat2014 and @Curledup14.

You could ask what they think are the biggest challenges and opportunities for your local authority. Is the role supporting councillors? If so you could ask what t they value most in administrative support.

DancingNotDrowning · 04/10/2025 14:51

Presumably you mean as part of the interview process:

  • is the role a new one
  • What made the previous role holder successful
  • what is the department turnover like
  • what are the key characteristics that they think the successful candidate will need
  • are there any requisite skills that you haven’t demonstrated
DancingNotDrowning · 04/10/2025 14:52

If you ask them the questions @topcat2014 and @Curledup14 suggest they’ll be baffled.

they’re expecting questions about the role

Pinkissmart · 04/10/2025 14:54

Op
Research. What are you genuinely curious about? It’s so easy to spot a coached question- much nicer to just have a genuine conversation.

topcat2014 · 04/10/2025 15:20

I presumed the councillors are willing amateurs who know nothing, rather than the technical trained staff the OP will be working for?

Strollingby · 04/10/2025 15:24

I wouldn't necessarily think they were expecting role based questions I would be asking about challenges, what are they most proud of, what has surprised them about being a councillor v what they expected before they started.

Cadenza12 · 04/10/2025 15:28

Presumably the e councillors will be involved in the work of the department in some way so keep conversation around that, or at least start at that. How long have you been a councillor? What's most challenging? Etc. Just smile and look riveted.
