How can we help without taking over

DC got their first job and has carried out some shifts. He hasn’t been paid for the shifts he has completed (nothing to do with payroll cut offs, it’s over a 2 month period and DC was aware they may have missed the payroll cutoff in advance)
DC let us know they hadn’t been paid so we advised them to let their employer know. They said that DC hadn’t been set up properly. They would pay them later that day. DC messaged again today to say they still hadn’t received their wages. DH has seen the messages exchanged and has said that DC has not badgered and been polite about it all The employers have been less polite in replies stating that ‘keep messaging won’t speed up how quick DC gets paid’. How long do we leave it before helping/stepping in and where does DC stand in not being paid - any legislation we could look into to help them? When I worked in payroll, we bent over backwards to ensure employees got paid if wages were missing e.g being given the wrong bank details - they were paid and signed documents to say they would pay back if wages received etc - never a problem there, so I’m a little lost how I can help and it’s also been 3/4years since I was in payroll.

Also to add trying not to fight DC battles as this will be part of growing up. Struggling not to let mama bear out 🤣

If he doesn't get paid take it up with ACAS. There will be a form to complete.

Thank you. I will get them to speak to ACAS tomorrow. They don’t have college so it won’t be a rush job and DH is at home so he can help. (He is the way better parent for these situations). Its definitely one of those situations I should know the answer to but never needed the knowledge so obv dumped it from my brain!

Some organisations are dreadful at onboarding - did works for the NHS and there is almost always an issue when she changes hospitals. Her line managers have usually been very supportive and proactive in getting this resolved though.

If your ds is working for a small company I'd be more worried though. There is no excuse for not transferring an advance until the issue is resolved.

A key factor will be who your DC has been emailing is it Payroll/HR or his manager. Often it’s the manager who hasn’t done the forms which may explain the irritated response.

I would suggest a slightly different tack if he hasn’t emailed Payroll/HR, do this and ask if they are waiting for any forms, information and what the payroll schedule is. As you know sometimes there is an early month payrun. He could also ask for a salary advance whilst they sort it out.

If you need to go in harder then it’s a breach of National Minimum Wage regs. They can just about justify not paying at the end of the month he joins but not the second month. https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage/employers-and-the-minimum-wage Contact ACAS.
