Anyone any idea what this might comprise of? Could imagine a typing test or inbox/in tray assessment but can't think what a written test might look like?

Many thanks - as ever! 😃

a response to an email perhaps?

Ours might require the interviewee to type a letter in Word ensuring it is set out correctly, all relevant details included, correct or appropriate sign-off, no spelling errors etc. Or it might involve setting up a basic Excel spreadsheet. Good luck!

It’ll be basic numeracy, grammar, how to use Word, Outlook. Mine have all been done on a PC not hand written.

GingerPanda · 30/09/2025 20:43

Probably not a typing test. It'll just be checking that you can write sensible sentences in English, getting the key points over clearly and politely. It saves a whole world of pain from accidentally recruiting someone who needs their work checking ALL THE TIME. Anyone can use chat gpt or a friend to write their job application so I would never rely on that.

Possibly a list of 8 or so tasks that you need to sort into order of priority..

E.g, Answering phone, opening mail, responding to e-mails, filing etc.

Search for a few competency tests online for examples.

As others have said, probably either an in tray test eg. Prioritising tasks/following instructions, or writing a letter or similar.

Thank you all for your responses - you have been very helpful!
At the end of the interview I will be given the opportunity to meet some local councillors. Any ideas of what to ask? I hope and pray they will do all the talking...!! I will post this question separately too.

I always ask nice positive things like ".what do you think is the best thing about xyz council" or "what makes you most proud of the council"

Things that make them feel good to answer

I would ask them what they feel their priorities are for the council going forward.

how to use word and outlook.
changing from portrait/landscape format. use graphs. change graphs from one format to another.
use headings, subheadings, section breaks, footnotes. possibly macros, templates

Haribosweets · 05/10/2025 22:54

The tests in my department with the council involve tasks of the actual job. For example a mock email to reply too, a telephone test, spelling test. Good Luck
