What sites do you use to job hunt?

I am mainly using linkedin; there are lots of positions, but I am not receiving much interest. I have only been job hunting for 3 weeks though and haven’t applied for that many roles.

Do you use easy apply? Follow up with recruiters? Call? Email?

I know is it a tricky market at the moment but there are lots of Finance Manager roles; perhaps lots of applicants too. I have good experience. Maybe my CV and cover letter need improvement.

I am still employed until mid November, do ideally would like a new job to start in December or the new year.

I tend to browse council websites for jobs, find a job is also government run and quite good, Google, glassdoor. And then I look at recruiter websites also.

Silverbirchleaf · 15/09/2025 21:12

Indeed is one of the main sites. Also websites that specifically deal with your area of expertise.

My dh looked for a new job recently, and found the whole situation has changed. Applications are screened using AI, so get AI savvy. If your cv doesn’t have the right buzz words, then it’ll be rejected.

Itisabeautifulday · 15/09/2025 21:50

Thank you both. I got AI to check my CV; but not sure if I should do more.

I think I need to up my game; perhaps spending more hours per day,

I used to use linkedin and then would try and find out the email address of the person hiring and email them directly to follow up if I didn't hear anything back!

Taytoface · 16/09/2025 08:29

Really, as someone who does a lot of hiring, unless you already know the person, don't do that.

Yuja · 16/09/2025 08:53

I’ve always looked for jobs on LinkedIn, but never applied with easy apply - I always go find it on the company’s careers site and apply direct.

From Thursday 18th I will be a 54 year old unemployed single mother 😢
Since my redundancy notice 4 weeks ago I have been applying for 1 job a day on average. We have been on gardening leave for the last 3 weeks so my work day is devoted to applying. Until it gets too wearying, then I look after myself.
I browse LinkedIn but mostly use the sites of the companies in my field (academic, science, publishing). I have also contacted many of the old colleagues I have worked with over the last 30 years.
I am very low.

Yup. Receiving a rejection while your finger is still on the Send button when you’ve spent all day tailoring your cv and covering letter is horrible. Then shake yourself down to be “excited about the opportunity…..”.

One post was formally advertised only in the US, but informally the hiring manager said strong UK candidates would be considered.
I applied, got rejected within minutes, contacted the hiring manager (who I know) who was able to push it through. AI has a lot of limitations.

Sorry to hear that. I am trying to keep positive, doing my meditations, exercising, reading, job hunting, keeping busy. I know is not simple. I am grateful for the time I have had to recharge but do miss work, the structure it gives you, the purpose and social aspect.

I think I need to up my game and apply to at least 5 jobs per day and be more proactive.

I will consider a career change if needed, as long as I can make a living/ earn some money; but will try my career first.

Best of luck

FWIW a few people I know got jobs by applying on spec to companies they were a good fit for, when the companies weren't advertising. It means your CV goes straight to HR not filtered via AI and they have you in mind as a pro-active person, when they are next looking.

The other thing is, to apply for jobs a big jump up from current pay grade. Fewer people apply for them. Fewer people have the full skillset.

Thank you. That is a good idea.

You mean, don’t follow up directly?

Hang on in there ❤️ job hunting is fucking soul destroying - I reckon from all the millions of applications I did, about 8-10% converted to interview. So many rejections and outright ignores, and I have a lot of experience. You only need one yes! There’s something there for you but it is a numbers game so if you have time, try and do more than one a day.

It’s a horrible business.

When you are officially redundant, don’t forget to sign on for Jobseekers Allowance. It was the only benefit my dh was entitled to, but £90 a week is better than nothing, plus he got petrol money for interviews refunded. You have to attend the Job Seekers appointments, which he found of no use to him, but you gave to play the game.

Hope you find something soon.

I am registered as self-employed so not entitled to job seekers.

I reccomend the book “ what color is your parachute” which is updated each year and gives you a process for finding and applying for non- advertised posts.
