Do I have to work extra days?

i work Thursdays and Fridays and the rest of the week I’m a stay at home mum. This year Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day fall on my working days.
my work closes on those days so I have to take them as holidayays.
my employer has said I also need to work an additional 3 days in December to make up for the days we are closed.
is this right?
for me it’s the equivalent of working an extra week and half as I only work two days a week.

It should be one or the other, either it comes out of your holiday allowance or you make up the days. You shouldn't have to do both.

Gentlydoesit2 · 10/09/2025 14:11

No. You absolutely don't have to make it up by working extra

If it isn't taken from her holiday allowance she might, if she has already been given the bank holidays pro-rated.

But she's said in her post that she's taking them as holiday

Either holiday or make up not both. Speak to HR.

So no pay + work extra? Yeah right!

GFB · 10/09/2025 15:09

Agree, it's one or the other you take holiday or you work extra.

However, if bank holidays are in addition to your annual leave e.g. 25 days plus bank holidays. You should be entitled to some of the bank holidays pro rata as well. So I would check with your pro rata BH entitlement as this may cover a few hours and you might not need to take full days as holiday.

Hope what I'm trying to say makes sense!

True but she also says she has to make it up so both can't be true. There is obviously some wires crossed.

I have a very similar work schedule to you @Weekendwidow - I work Thursday/Friday/Sunday.
We only close Christmas Day and New Years Day.

This year I can either take Christmas Day and New Year’s Day as paid holidays, using some of my annual leave entitlement, meaning I only need to work 2 days each of those weeks or I can choose to not use annual leave and make up the 2 days elsewhere in the month.

2025ishere · 10/09/2025 15:22

I have to take bank holidays off as we are closed if they fall on my work days (I’m part time). But as I work 3days ie 60% of full time, I only get 60% of a bank holiday off from my bank holiday leave allowance, so I have to cover the rest of the bank holiday using up my annual leave. If you only work 40% of each bank holiday off, then yes it might be that you either top it up with annual leave, or work other days to pay back (and you then have more annual leave).

No crossed wires. My boss wants me to work three extra additional days as well as taking holiday for the three days I would usually be at work but we are closed.

It is pretty usual in retail to be asked/required to work extra at Christmas.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 10/09/2025 18:57

You boss is confused. It’s one or the other. Either make up the days or take them as leave. Not both.

Wethers121 · 10/09/2025 19:21

it depends. I work part time 20 hours a week. So for me, we work our normal annual leave plus bank holiday and then times it by 0.54 to get my pro Tara holiday entitlement. Then if a bank holiday lands in my working day, I do have to use a holiday day for that as I’ve already been given them.

Is this the case for you? Most time this works in my fa our tbh but it’s luck of the draw too.

Weekendwidow · 10/09/2025 20:35

I don’t mind taking holiday for Christmas. That’s not my issue. It’s more that I find it really hard to work extra days. I have no childcare and then have to pay extra for after school and breakfast clubs. Working a five day week when I only work a two day week makes it really difficult for home life.
