To give notice to current employer

Hi.
After 2 years in my current job, I have decided to resign. Believe or not, I have never given notice before to a job, so I am not sure what I need to do.
Do I just let my manager know.. sending an email telling them of my intention or should I write a “proper “ letter, email it to them and to HR as well?
TIA

What does your contract say?

you normally send an email resigning, thanking then and say what your last day will be. Just look at google for resignations emails; yes copy HR or follow their procedure ad per contract and company rule.

If you like your line manger then you tell them in person and follow up with an email

if you don’t - just email and cc HR

Thanks. check my contract, it doesn't say anything about who to contact or procedures.. just 3 months notice.
during a call today.. I mentioned it to my direct line manager. However, I will send a proper resignation letter on Monday.
Thanks once again

3 months notice seems a lot.

I’ve never made it more formal than it needs to be. A simple email, no over explaining, but state your final day and work out any annual leave you are owed and make sure you use it up.

Three months is very normal in more senior roles. It is negotiable so do talk to your line manager if you want to leave earlier. In my experience, it depends on what project you are on currently and how much handover would you need.

DS started a new job in July and had to give three months notice to his previous employer. He had some annual leave owing, so was able to leave a couple of weeks before the three months was up.

Never explain never complain never apologize is a good rule of thumb for resignation letters.

no a Senior role.. but 3 months notice is the rule for everyone. And this is what it has been stopping me on giving notice before now, as 3 months it’s too long to find a job a then give notice. However, I could not think to have to work another year end (work in finance) so I have to give notice now so I can be free just in time for Xmas and hopefully to a new role after. 😄
