New job regret

Sorry but this is complicated. I’ve been working in an hourly paid capacity for a large educational setting. I recently started a new job with a permanent part time contract with the same organisation but in a different location. I was working half the week in my old hourly paid role and half in the new role. The new role offered more hours and I’m working my notice with the hourly job. The problem is that I don’t like the new role. I’ve had little training and feel out of my depth and isolated there, where my old job is fun and the team is friendly. I just want to quit the new job and stop the notice period for the hourly job. Please give me some advice. I’m not sleeping and I’m very unhappy. Thanks for reading.

Have you discussed it with HR? Have the advertised your old job?

Agathabagshot · 09/09/2025 05:13

i haven’t discussed it with HR and my old role always has availability for hourly workers. I spoke to someone senior (not line manager) who said it would be best to quit new job sooner rather than later and just ask for hourly job back. I feel such a fool but the new job is not what I expected it to be.

Don’t feel foolish. I think a lot of people, including me, have started a new job only to realise that the team aren’t great, the training and support aren’t there and it’s not what we expected.

I hate when people say "have you discussed it with HR".

A lot of companies do not have any HR department.

I work in a school. We have no HR department for example

I’m so sorry, what a shame.

In your position, I’d do what your senior colleague suggested, but I’m late 50s and not trying to impress/develop my career and I think life’s too short to be miserable at work. Bit different if you’re younger and the new job is a good career move.

good luck x

Thank you for your kind replies. I really appreciate them. I’m mid fifties and I’m not trying to climb the corporate ladder either. I thought this would be an interesting, rewarding role and I didn’t expect so much responsibility and extra work. After looking at some of the posts here, there seems to be a lot of expectation that part time workers actually do a full time job and I’m not prepared to do that. I’ll speak to hourly job’s line manager later and see if they’ll still have me. Hopefully they will!
