Annual leave entitlement

15 replies

undisclosed2025 · 05/09/2025 21:16

Hi

can anyone help me work out my annual leave entitlement please?

full time 37.5 hours, entitlement is 28 days paid holiday, plus all bank holidays.

I work Tuesday-Friday 30 hours.

I’m struggling working this out to make sure what I’ve been told is correct.

Forgot to say, holiday calendar runs from 1st Jan, through to 31st December

I'm not really clear what you're asking. Have you just started and want to know how many days you have for this year until the entitlement resets?

undisclosed2025 · 05/09/2025 21:22

Sorry I should have explained better. Not a new employee, have just transferred to a new company under TUPE and want to know that the holiday entitlement I’ve been given for the year is correct, as old employer went bust so didn’t transfer all employee details.

they’ve worked it out at 25.5 days annual leave for the holiday period, however as I don’t work a Monday i believe I’m entitled to a proportion of the bank holidays I’d usually get off if I was a full time worker?

Do you mean 28 + 8 = 36 days for full time staff?
Do you work the same number of hours each day?

If you do then your entitlement is â…˜ of full time = 28.8 days (would be rounded up to 29 days) where a day is however many hours you work each day.

Can also be calculated as 7.2 weeks worth of holidays for full time so you'd get 7.2 x 30 hours = 216 hours.

216/7.5 = 28.8 (same as the first calculation)

You are 0.8 of full time hours so you are looking at 22.4 days per year.

you will also be entitled to 0.8 of the bank holidays so roughly 6.4 so 28.8 days.

most places give an hourly leave instead of days to make it easier to calculate leave for part time workers. Does your business do this?

There’s a reason I don’t work in HR 😂

yes that’s correct for full time staff

i work the same hours Tuesday through to Friday totalling 30 hours per week.

I have a feeling they’ve given me 0.5 of a day in excess in my allowance

thank you for your help to work it out 😊

I think it should be 28.8 days if there's 8 bank holidays this year
28+8=36
36 divided by 37.5 fte then multiplied by 30 but you have to use those days for any bank holidays that don't fall on a Monday so it may work out at 25.5 anyway.

LordEmsworth · 05/09/2025 21:27

37.5h week equals 7.5hour day times 5 days? Are your30 hours spread evenly, so 7.5 hours each on 4 days?

So 36 days is 270 hours, for someone working full time.

270 hours (allowance) divided by 37.5 (full time) times 30 (your hours) = 216 hours, or 28.8 days.

In 2025, you need to use some of that to cover the bank holidays that don't fall on a Monday - 7.5 hours each for new year's day, good Friday, Christmas day, boxing day. Leaving 24.8 days.

No unfortunately it’s just worked out as days. I have 29 days showing as my holidays but have obviously taken some this year already (luckily keep a record) but don’t want to overbook my actual entitlement and end up owing time back!

As others have said, based on my employers, 28.8 days. If any of the bank holidays fall on your normal working days then you'd have to book them off as annual leave. This could vary year to year.

Does this annual leave include bank holidays?

Harassedevictee · 05/09/2025 21:34

Full Time 28 days + 8 BH = 36 days x 7.5 hours =270 hours

Part Time 270 hours /37.5x30=216 hours gross leave

BH Falling on working days
NYD (Wed) = 7.5
GF = 7.5
EM = 0.0
MD = 0.0
SBH = 0.0
ABH = 0.0
XD (Thursday) = 7.5
BD (Friday) = 7.5
Total = 22.5 hours
NOTE: As NYD, XD and BD move you need to redo in years they fall on a Monday.

216 hours - 22.5 hours =193.5 hours net leave / 7.5 = 25.8 days.

They have rounded down which is why I always do hours.

So if you're a full time employee and you get 28 days annual leave. What do full time staff do about bank holidays? Do they just take these off or are they booked off as part of the 28 days?

Usually full time staff don't have to worry about BHs they just take them as they come...and have 28 days to play with. For part time staff, you have to add them on and then minus them off any days you were due to work them.

You need to add 8 bank holidays (or however many fall into the leave year) to 28+8 x 0.8 to give you your annual leave entitlement and bank holidays. Then, you have to just minus off any bank holidays that falls on your working day which won't be many as you don't work Mondays and they usually are on a Monday.

Rendering · 05/09/2025 21:40

It is best to always calculate in hours as other pp have said. This is especially true for people who work part days or variable hours each day. You can get away with managing your annual leave in days because you work 4 x 7.5 hour days...but some people work all sorts of patterns and so annual leave in hours is the only way to manage it

Chick981 · 05/09/2025 21:42

I work 37 hours a week and for each bank holiday Monday I get just under 6 hours added to my leave pot. However for each bank holiday that doesn’t fall on a Monday (I.e Christmas) I have to give back around 1.5 hours. Just to flag in case it’s similar for you and you didn’t know!
