Self assessment or umbrella company

I’m going to be doing a few hours alongside my main nursing job - dilemma is shall I do it via self assessment or umberella company with the job I will be working for- I know there is a small charge for the umberella- and can’t claim any expenses. Not planning to do many hours and probably won’t even make 1000 at very most .

Am clueless with this any advice ?

if it’s genuinely going to bring in less than £1000 you may qualify for the £1,000 “trading allowance” in which case you don’t need to do either https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tax-free-allowances-on-property-and-trading-income

you could contact HMRC to check

even above that if you’re not earning much then a basic self employment self assessment return isn’t too much work, and you can claim the £1,000 trading allowance tax free instead of claiming expenses.

Otherwise I personally think Umbrella Company is quite a good deal just to avoid all the hassle of dealing with book keeping, tax returns and things like that.

The company you are working for may have a preference too.
