Am I unemployable?

I left a part time job earlier this year as the work load was full time but there was no prospect of the hours matching the actual work. Since then I’ve struggled to be shortlisted for anything at all and am getting seriously concerned. I’m in my 40s and have worked in education most of my career but also have experience in admin. I’ve applied for retail, HCA work and admin in private and public sectors but I can’t get an interview. Is this the market right now or am I doing something wrong?? I care for my DM as well as 2 kids so really am looking for a part time job that is actually part time but these roles seem as rare as hens’ teeth.

The job market is grim at the moment. Don't take it personally (I know it's hard not to). I wonder if you're trying for too low level positions as you have a long work history? I know ai is hated here but run your cv and personal statement through the free version of ChatGPT or copilot and see if they can strengthen them for you and suggest where you could improve the evidence you've provided. You can also ask it to find roles that match your experience. There may be somewhere government funded that does similar. You need to show how you match the criteria set out in jd and tailor your application and give examples. Don't be vague or humble, eg say I, not we and show how you added value. Consider asking recruiters if they'll consider part time even if they advertise full and try to book a chat with them before you apply. It'll help you get a feel of what they're looking for and if the role would work with your caring responsibilities. Good luck!

I will advice you to get into ai data labeling, what you need is getting a USA profile account to task on that is fully verified, if you are not able to create one, then buy. For instance I use Labelbox usa profile, then change your location to U.s, after that update your payment details paypal, stripe, wall. Then get to tasks and get paid every Friday.
Note that you won't be able to get those jobs if your account is not a USA profile account because of limitations. If you make enough efforts and determination you can bag 800-1000$ every week, what you need are efforts and attention to your work and definitely if you've never been a freelancer before do research about this before getting into it. gracias

I recruit for public sector admin roles and we're getting so many applications for each role. Lots are AI and very similar to each other. If you had applied to one of my positions I'd want to know why you were applying or the role, I'd want to know that you want it for it's own sake, written in a genuine way and that you would want to stay for a while. We have lots of applicants who want to move on within a couple of months or only want sponsorship (which we can't offer). Good luck OP!

You aren't unemployable, but part-time jobs that fit around family responsibilities are as rare as unicorn eggs, and that is why you are having trouble even getting as far as an interview. There will be a huge number of applicants for every position.

I am having similar problems although am 57 and have been thinking it must be due to age. I am currently employed but fixed term contract coming to an end in a few months. I wasn't even shortlisted for a post at my old workplace where I had done the exact job before and been really good at it, and this has really shaken me and knocked my confidence. My fall back was going to be care work but it has really shocked me that you haven't been shortlisted for that either. I hope you manage to find something soon. I am just thinking that it's my applications that are letting me down as I'm not up to date with the AI stuff. I have secured only one interview in recent months, didn't go for it in the end but am getting worried now. On the other hand my current employer has been trying to recruit for a couple of roles ( although only temporary roles) and has had barely any applicants are are despairing at how to fill the vacant posts.

Part time retail?

Unfortunately AI is making getting past the application stage really difficult. It’s a bit of a double edged sword.

  1. it seems the majority of people are using AI to create their CVs/application, what this means is that a high proportion are ticking all the boxes when compared against the essential requirements/keywords so anyone who isn’t matching all the requirements is sifted out because they score lower. Unfortunately the vast majority of those CVs are pure bullshit as shown when we interview the candidate and they have very little of the experience their CV said they have.

  2. Lots of CVs are never reviewed by a human being, they are sifted by AI which looks for keywords and then gives a success score based on percentage match to essential requirements, this means that people who have the right experience but have not used the correct terminology or matched their language to the job description may miss out.

what this means is that you need to think like AI, you need tailor your CV to match the job description/person spec so you get the ticks and can then have the opportunity to be interviewed.

You’re competing against the new graduates and people who have just done their exams and are fully flexible.

I managed to find a job recently but it’s taken weeks and I suspect that AI is filtering out my application on my occasions.
