Walking back into a ****storm tomorrow

I've been away on holiday for a week, back in the office tomorrow. There was a bit of a crisis happening before I went so I wrapped up as much as I could and did a decent handover. It's all blown up, my boss (CEO) has been sending furious emails and I've spent the week keeping a face on for DH and the DC while lying awake for hours at night thinking about it. My team have handled it like troopers but have also been messaging me and have set up a meeting first thing tomorrow before CEO gets in so I'm not blindsided, bless their thoughtfulness.

I'm going in extra early to clear my desk before my team get in, in case I'm getting fired. I don't know how I'm going to hold it together TBH. I've told DH that it's bad, but not how bad. He just said it's a bank holiday, don't worry about it until tomorrow. I'm tired, my holiday was ruined and I just want to go in and get it over with.

I am really glad it worked out.

When you can breath again, this would be a really good example in an interview of when a decision you made didnt work out as planned and how you dealt with it and what you would do differently next time.

Your boss sounds very unpleasant.

@BonneMaman77

You can use "see all" to just look at the OPs updates - or if you are on the app, just click the little funnel thing.

ButterPiesAreGreat · 26/08/2025 16:41

Oh that's fantastic and goes to show it's often much worse in our heads. Well done for standing your ground and getting him to agree to changes that will only be good for you.

Now, do have a proper rest - even if it has to be this weekend.

Thepeopleversuswork · 26/08/2025 16:41

Well done! sounds like the best possible outcome in the circumstances and it also sounds as if the CEO realises he overdid it.

I think you've earned a bit of a tipple when you get through your horrendous reporting stuff...

Yodeldodeldo · 26/08/2025 16:42

Once the dust is settled I'd move on from this company at a time of convenience.

Which is not the same rage quitting and taking a pay hit and a lower level job.

PumpkinPie2016 · 26/08/2025 16:42

Well done @ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay it sounds like you were well prepared for the meeting and that has demonstrated that you know what you're doing.

You did what you could in the first instance with the information available. The new information changed things but you couldn't have known.

I'm so pleased that things went smoothly with CEO and that the next steps are now planned.

Ok, out of my 4 o'clock. CEO was surprisingly nice and calm about it. No shouting from him, no tears from me. He did more than once indirectly allude to some rather violent thoughts last week, but at no point did I feel unsafe so here we are.

He wanted to know what went wrong, which I told him, and what I think we should do next. I was armed with some really great lines from the podcast recommended by a PP (💐), so was able to talk about "doing the next right thing" and the legal advice needed to ascertain what that thing was. He's accepted my recommendations and sent me and the VPs off to get them rolling. It's going to be a late night but I'm so relieved.

Very glad for you, OP.

They had delegated the decision-making to you on this occasion and you took it, along with the responsibility. You did your job. Mistakes happen, but you've responded in exactly the right way and presented solutions.

Kudos to you and I hope you can now put it behind you. I'm sorry it ruined your holiday, though. 💐

AugustSlippedAwayIntoAMomentInTime · 26/08/2025 16:45

Fantastic to focus calmly on 'what we need to do next' with him. Great outcome.

Comtesse · 26/08/2025 16:47

It’s horrible when these kind of compliance problems come up. The sooner you flag it the better. Sorry it trashed your holiday but ride it out and keep trucking…..

Venalopolos · 26/08/2025 16:50

We should take a moment to recognise this as incredible leadership.

Blaming is useless when things go wrong and it’s so important to protect your employees where genuine mistakes have been made and work together to a resolution.

It’s a hard line to tow to get to a result where the employee feels the gravity of their mistake such that they will never make it again, but also feels comfortable and supported moving forward.

Well done CEO and well done OP for dealing with it all so professionally, it’s just rubbish it ruined your holiday!

thestudio · 26/08/2025 16:52

Oh congrats! (Can anyone point me to th podcast?

CinnabarRed · 26/08/2025 16:54

Really pleased with how it’s working out for you. You never know, you may even look back on this awful time as a huge milestone in your career in the future. Some of my hardest times have, with hindsight and distance, turned out to be enormously important for my reputation and growth.

Ohnobackagain · 26/08/2025 16:54

@ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay sounds like you have a bit of impostor syndrome going on. I was only saying to my boss, I always assume I’m going to get told off for something and I never have. I assume I must be in trouble and usually someone has sent a compliment. My boss says it’s because I care about doing a good job and the reputation of the company. Currently encouraging me to apply for more senior roles because she thinks I’ll
be great, but there’s me worrying about the 1 minor thing in the job description I haven’t done against the 99 I have! I’ve seen your update and hopefully you can turn this around and all will be well.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 26/08/2025 16:54

Great news - well done!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 26/08/2025 16:54

AmoozzBoosh · 25/08/2025 22:51

There's a pretty good, short, podcast from the BBC called When it Hit The Fan - all about PR and communications. They had an episode just in the last week I think in which they discussed this sort of public relations disaster and how those in charge (i.e. your CEO) need to not lose their shit, take a step back and calmly, rationally guide the business, board & investors through the storm.

Might be worth a quick listen to, op, if nothing else it will hopefully help remind me you that just because youe CEO can't handle a crisis, doesn't mean you're screwed.

@thestudio - I assume it must be the one mentioned on the first page, quoted above.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/08/2025 16:57

That’s a relief, @ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay!

Words · 26/08/2025 16:57

Well done OP.

rainbowstardrops · 26/08/2025 16:58

Well done @ThrowMeAwayTheVeryNextDay

MaggieBsBoat · 26/08/2025 16:58

ClearFoundation · 26/08/2025 16:29

Well done OP. You went in as a problem solver rather than a blame thrower. Exactly right. Big hugs.

This! Well done OP. You did better than I would have I think.

Donttellempike · 26/08/2025 16:59

Your CEO has behaved appallingly from start to finish here. At least you know where you stand with him. I’d be looking for the exit

Mischance · 26/08/2025 16:59

You went in with some constructive ideas going forward. Absolutely the right thing to do. Pat on the back.

Wrenjay · 26/08/2025 17:01

The real issue now is you will never get that time back. It ruined your holiday, in effect you were working on your annual leave. How are they going to compensate you? They cannot. Leave that company, in the meantime put a boundary in place that you cannot, under any circumstances, be contacted or held liable, for employment issues during annual leave. Never look at company communications when on leave. If CEO can do it so can you.

GarlicLitre · 26/08/2025 17:01

Oh, good, I can take you off my watchlist now 😁 You were so clearly doing all the right things; I was worried your bosses might prefer to dump on you instead of working with your solutions.

Well done! Hope you'll allow yourself a disproportionate celebration this evening, and that everything proceeds swiftly in the right direction.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/08/2025 17:03

CEO probably realises he didn’t exactly cover himself with glory either if you were left on your Tod to deal with a situation if it was that critical .
