Are there any jobs you can do one day a week starting after 3pm?

I have a sleep disorder and many conditions including ME/CFS. I haven't been able to work at all for the last 4 years but partly because I've been using the little energy I have to try to pursue various diagnoses and treatments. I've now got a dozen or so diagnoses and feel I finally know what's wrong with me so I can finally start using the small amount of usable hours on something like work. But what can you do one day a week in the evening?

I just heard about Match Day jobs in sports stadiums but don't know how likely they are to be evening jobs? I'm in Scotland - my PD seemed to think that evening football matches are more of a thing in England? Do you ever get catering jobs that are just one day a week and in the evening? What's temping like these days? I signed up when I was a teenager one summer but they were useless - just kept telling me to phone back the next day while my friend got given opportunities despite our cvs being more or less identical at that age and there being no difference between us. Probably just the company but it put me off.

Ah, I can't drive unfortunately. I've got all sorts of impairments. To be honest I'm not really sure what I'm capable of at the moment. There are a few treatments on the horizon for some of my conditions for the first time in my life and if I had improvements in even a few areas I reckon I would have more options but for now it's really hard to tell what's going to be beyond me. I don't think I'd manage help anyone else with their finances. Some sort of zero hour contract does sound appealing though. Where I could just pick and choose my hours and not do one week if I had something that zapped all my energy.

Teatime cat visitor sounds like a dream! Do people pay much for that though?!

I mean I'm not expecting much but if I'm going to go to the massive effort of getting dressed, I'd want more than a fiver😂

I pay my cat lady £10 a visit. But I usually book her for a weekend or a week at a time.

Of the things I’ve come up with I think the online conversational language lessons are the best option…

You don't have to meet exam criteria or be qualified to tutor languages online. Some people just want conversational skills. A long time ago I tutored on First Tutors and it looks like they're still going.

Other than that, maybe a driver for Amazon? You can presumably pick up just the hours you want to. I don't know much about it myself though.

Hmm, yeah, not sure my speech is up to that unfortunately. Maybe if the new drug comes out in the next 5 years....

With the utmost kindness intended, I think it might be a bit tricky for mumsnetters to find the right sort of job for you given the circumstances. And I hope that there is someone along soon to prove me wrong. I think that paid jobs that do not require you to get dressed, only work for a couple of hours one evening a week, that you don't need to drive to (or for), that require you to speak, are quite difficult to find. Even zero hours contracts (and god knows my kids have done enough of them) do expect you to be on a rota for most of the time. There are definitely charities out there that love to get help, as little or as much as you can give, but it is not paid, and often come with training requirements, DBS etc. Hoping you find something. x

School governance. Look up clerking roles (would be t-time only)

Lifestooshort71 · 26/08/2025 14:59

Could you start off agreeing to a couple of hours a week in a charity shop and see how you cope with the commitment? It would be unpaid but would 'look good' when you want to apply for something else.

Tutoring

Training AI type jobs

Sleeposaurus · 26/08/2025 16:18

I've heard of people making some extra money training AI which can be done at whatever time suits you. With your qualifications you may even be able to get a niche training role. Ive not seriously looked into it though

GreyAreas · 26/08/2025 17:50

Some coffee places near me use a site that workers can pick up any shifts from and work flexibly rather than regular hours limber.work/worker/

LIZS · 26/08/2025 17:52

Usher or front of house at cinema or theatre
