Resignation or sick leave?

Babybelle81 · 21/08/2025 18:13

Dear all,

I hope someone can advise.
I am considering resigning from my job. It is making me very ill with stress, and causing me to not sleep and making me feel generally awful. My manager is bullying me, and I have had enough.

My question is, do I resign and then go off sick, or go off sick and then resign?

what is best?

thank you all
x

If your mental health is suffering to this degree - you need out

GP on Monday get a sick note, you dont need one for a week but you explain that you are so stressed, they may hopefully sign you off for 2 weeks or a month

However long you get signed off for you sit and think about where you need to go. If the other job offer is good, one where you think you will be happy, then accept that, hand your notice in and get sick notes. Your company who you are with will probably come to you with a shorter notice period - they dont want to be paying what is gardening leave

Im old enough to say - your health is your wealth - and all you owe any employer is an hours work for an hours pay

Get a firm offer if another job in writing before you hand in your notice.

PS You don’t get any benefits for five months if you resign from a job without one to go to (as say, the one who verbally promised remained or whatever and so you try and claim benefits as youre now unemployed).

Have you accepted the new job and do you have a start date?

If so, I'd resign and give a month's notice. If they try and insist on 3 months I would say that you are suffering from sypmtoms of stress which you perceive to be directly related to the bullying and uncomfortable working conditions. I'd make it it clear that working 3 months would significantly impact my health and ability to work.

I resigned from my awful job a month ago, wish I'd done it years ago!

Yes I have another job with a firm offer.
I am going to go sick on Monday and then once I’ve emailed my cert, I am emailing HR with my notice.
she will try and badger me with messages and emails, and want to ‘catch up’ and call it ‘welfare’ as I’ve seen her do it with numerous others. My dear ex colleague tried to end her own life and I watched her belittle this action and push and push and push. I am done seeing it and dealing with it. It’s utterly awful. The new job is 40k less but I honestly don’t care right now. I’d rather live on beans than go on like this. Thank you all for your replies. It’s really helped.

If you have a new job to go to then resign and go off sick for your notice period.

You can self-certify for 7 days and then speak to your GP about how this is affecting your mental and physical health to get them to sign you off for longer.

This will give you time to recover before you start your new job.

I have been working in a toxic environment for 3 years and it has destroyed my self confidence and my belief in my ability to do my job. I have had two period of sickness because my mental health was affected. I submitted a grievance about my manager this week as I have decided I am no longer willing to work for that company and I think it will give me the last push I needed to find something else. Basically my point is you owe them nothing and shitty employers don't deserve any kind of loyalty from you so don't feel bad about going off sick during your notice.

ACAS may help you.

She sounds horrendous.

BrightSideOfTheMoon · 22/08/2025 13:10

Oh and record everything. All the notes and messages she sends you while you are off sick. Forward them to a friend if it is too much for your mental health. Or straight to HR.

Babybelle81 · 23/08/2025 11:05

Thank you everybody.
I really appreciate all your kind messages x
