I’m interviewing for an internal position against a colleague in their 70s. They have worked at the company for over 10 years and are pursuing a funded training that is relevant to the role. They also hold a membership/fellowship in a particular field that I don’t have.
However, this employee has had complaints and is no longer allowed to face some clients, as a few individuals raised concerns about their behaviour.
I recognise they are strong in terms of skills and knowledge. I’ve only been with the company for three years and are relatively junior but I am able to work in a field they are restricted from, which is essential since all employees dedicate 30+ hours to that task.
I’m wondering if there’s any point in applying and going through the interview process when I’m competing against them. I suspect if they don’t get the job, they might cause a huge fuss, as they would be very disappointed especially since they are pursuing the qualification to secure a similar role.

Always apply for internal positions you are interested in. Even if you don’t get it you are stating your intentions to those higher up than you and they will often then start looking for development opportunities for you. So even applying for a position you are unlikely to get can help you in the longer term. This job, it’s difficult to say really without knowing more about the two candidates.

Thanks, that’s helpful advice.

You are incredibly unlikely to get it if you don't apply so why not?

isitme111 · 19/08/2025 19:43

Go for it as it will be good interview experience if nothing else.

Where I work, they are far more likely to promote a younger person than someone in their 70s. Do apply, I hope you get the job!

Brilliant advice. And you definitely won’t get the role if you don’t apply. Take a chance, nothing will be lost and you could even stand to gain. Good luck!

You’re far more likely to get it if you apply than if you don’t.

Just be realistic on your expectations, some people assume that they’re a slam dunk for internal roles but that’s never wise.

I don't understand why you wouldn't apply? Worst case scenario is:

You have gained valuable interview experience
You have signalled to senior staff your enthusiasm for progressing
You have given it your best shot
You won't be kicking yourself for not trying.

I can't think of a downside to applying.

I don't know your job or, I suspect, the field that you work in, but the other candidate sounds as if s/he has a lot of drawbacks.

Please do consider applying- and good luck and let us know!

Thank you all.
I’ve started the application, which is due in a couple of days. I’m a bit apprehensive about the interview, but I’ll give it my best shot.
