Hi all,

I really need some sound advice please. I have an offer on the table and need to decide.

Current job:

  • Stronger salary/benefits
  • Closer commute (very easy 10 minute drive)
  • Toxic director above which means little room for growth, and daily frustration/ drama
  • Corporate culture (finance sector) - I like the pace but it can be exhausting

New job:

  • More aligned to my previous experience and sector (more exciting)
  • Better job title and team structure around me
  • In theory the culture should be better (academia/industry)
  • Package is excellent (overseas) but still less than current role
  • commute is further (25-30 mins drive)

I’ve tried weighting/scoring these but to be honest salary is the biggest kicker.

What would you do?? Anyone left a better paid job for another?

Any chance for progression in new job? I’ve left toxic job for less well paying job. Great move (but moving from. Very long hours culture to in-house). Got promoted quickly to more than previous salary.
many years later, job has turned toxic and considering again whether to take pay cut to move.

As you’re asking and not just going for it regardless, I assume the salary aspect of the current job is still worth sticking it out for. Depends on your own opinion really.

For instance, I don’t love getting up for work and I don’t love having to spend 40 hours a week doing it, but I have too, so I would want to be paid the most possible for it, so taking a lower paid salary would be a no for me.

It’s only your opinion that matters though, it’s your life.

There’s a decent difference (but both are generous). Rightly or wrongly I have always placed a lot of value in salary/status and so walking away from something “better” seems silly. I know others would walk away with no job lined up at all if things had gotten so bad… I just don’t want to regret it.

What % difference in salary?

If you take the lower but still well paid role, will you still have plenty of money relative to your outgoings and commitments? Will the role help you to progress etc?

If yes to those Qs I’d seek to negotiate but take the pay cut, mainly due to the toxic director where you are.

About 10-15% lower.

It will affect how much we can save but shouldn’t affect ability to meet outgoings etc.

Hi OP. I have just recently moved roles within my company. Senior director has been trying to persuade me to leave my old job and take on a new one for a while and I was resistant because, whilst I liked my old job, my manager was difficult to work with. Not toxic at all, just an awful manager. But I didn't want to leave the job for a negative reason (ie, to get away from Kaye), rather I wanted it to be positive.

Anyway, I finally did accept and the difference is palpable. Much happier, more motivated.

My point is that I didn't realise how much Kaye was pulling me down.

Good luck with what you choose!
