Is it my imagination

Really value people’s thoughts on this one.

A senior manager at work queried in writing with a colleague my one day sick leave - “how sick is she?”

I was very sick but that’s not the point. Three other colleagues (junior to her) have raised concerns about her to management and via the HR portal as being hard to work with and inappropriate.

I feel the same, especially as it feels like she’s on a power trip.

Regardless, shall I drop it, speak with her, or log what I perceive is a very mistrusting, undermining comment.. OR just put on my big girl pants even thought I’m beyond cross?

Currently thinking the last two options.

Appreciate impartial ears.

Do you have a copy of the email? If so, raise it with HR. You can self certify sick leave for up to 7 days. How sick you are is subjective and irrelevant.

hi,
I do as it was shared with me.
Aware of the sickness policy and not worried about that at all - just wanted to get a feel as to whether the comment seemed inappropriate: appreciate your advice 👌

Hard to say from the OP. If it is literally just that I would likely drop it or at most have a word with her directly but I would think carefully about what you want to achieve. I haven’t seen enough to warrant going to Hr over it.

Gliblet · 16/08/2025 21:32

Was that all she said? Because with no additional information all you have to go on is assumption/inference and you could just as easily argue she might have been checking whether you were really okay to be back after just one day if you'd been ill enough to be off work...

“How sick is she” hardly sounds incriminating.
People take things far too personally and pedantically these days.

Drop it and move on.

I had my own business a few years ago, a very small one. I employed 3 staff. The amount of nonsense I got, staff not talking to each other, staff getting upset because A got a certain role but B didn’t was given something else, being accused of being too controlling etc etc.

I eventually got rid of everyone and hired family.

When you cause trouble in the work place you will be the first on the list to be shown the door when cuts need to be made. Sorry but I firmly believe there needs a much stronger attitude at work and less victimhood BS.

Agreed. Also asking could be a question to understand how long you would be away from work.

Please don’t use HR to run to like an parent. They aren’t going to do anything and it isn’t breaking any rules. You are allowed to ask how sick someone is (and emails can be misconstrued) to understand how long you may be off to understand if work needs to be covered.

Thanks to all the folk to replied.
I’m not a whinger, far from it, and it’s just that there’s context which obviously I haven’t done a good enough job of laying out.
No matter and will sit on my hands here then :)

I couldn’t get worked up over this honestly. I’d often ask this (of people who would know, obviously) to think ahead around what needs doing. It’s important to know for planning if you’ve got something short lived like a cold, vs emergency surgery with a hefty recovery.

That being said, I probably would’ve asked it more tactfully and made my intentions behind the question known.

Oscarsmom71 · 17/08/2025 20:38

Manager could have been trying to work out how long you’d be off by asking that.
i dont think it’s unreasonable or inappropriate.

Ta. It's all good. I've calmed down :)
They weren't my manager and I was back working, just strange all round.
