Denied pay rise on maternity leave

I've just finished 12 months maternity leave and taking annual leave until the end of September, my boss has just contacted me to say everyone is getting a pay rise this year but only if the have completed and are up to date with there e-learning by the 12th August ( I have only been given 1 weeks notice to complete it!).
As I've been on mat leave I haven't done the e-learning and haven't got access to a computer to do the work from home.

Is it unfair at I will not get a pay rise because of this?

Contact pregnant then screwed as this definitely sounds like discrimination

autienotnaughty · 08/08/2025 15:43

Are you in a union? That sounds discriminatory .

Bails123 · 08/08/2025 15:45

@autienotnaughty No I'm not but I think I'm going to join one now!

i work for local council , whilst I was on mat leave we were given a bonus. I got mine and work tried to say I had to pay it back (4 months later on my return) I rang unison, I wasn’t a member but they spoke to my manager and basically said you can’t do that. I didn’t have to join for them to do that.

A union won’t be able to support you with any issue that happened before you joined.

What does the e-learning entail? Is it a few hours work you could pop to the library and do or is a significant chunk of time needed to complete it? Have you spoken to your bosses and explained the situation?

Tablesandchairs23 · 08/08/2025 16:05

Bit late to join a union now. They wont represent you just because you joined because you need help! I think its discrimination. I'd get on to Acas if I was you.

Coconutter24 · 08/08/2025 16:06

Will you get the pay rise once you return in September and complete the online learning?

Teenytwo · 08/08/2025 16:15

Could you do a kit day and go in specifically for that?
I would say it is discrimination though, you’ve not been given time within your working hours to complete it but all staff not on maternity were.

winter8090 · 08/08/2025 18:41

How long would it take? The easy answer is as the poster above suggested a KIT day to get it done.
I do think they are on shaky grounds legally but I would encourage you to try and resolve it. Can you talk to HR? They may have more knowledge on what’s fair and lawful.
