Part time work on Fridays

I'm looking to go part time at work and debating which days to request. I want to drop to 3 days a week and I'm thinking working Wednesday-Friday which would give me a 4 day weekend every week but it wouldn't be off on Fridays which just seem so busy these days. However I can't help but think I'll get to a Friday and wish I wasn't working because it tends to be a shorter day where I work, yet I'd have to do a full day. I don't know anyone part time that works on a Friday so looking for people's views on how they find it?
I'm not sure I'd get that Friday feeling and by working the latter half of the week I don't know if I'd dread it more

If your work is flexible anc can accommodate, can you try it out both sides of the week? Like a trial period? Or maybe middle of the week like Tuesday-Thursday?

I think it also depends what you do. From the business's perspective will it be better that you’re there certain days over others. For example I’m doing 4 days and I’d have chosen Friday to have off however Monday is the only day without any regular meetings so it had to be that or nothing. They’d have said no to it being any other day due to business impact. As it happens I love having Mondays off, like others have said so it’s turned out fine.

MaleficentQueen · 26/07/2025 13:20

It all depends on if your workplace can accommodate it. It’s not what works best for you, it’s what works best for the workplace. You can request specific days, by all means, but be prepared to hear a straight no, or an alternative suggestion based on current staffing levels/company demand.

I used to like having one of my days as Friday because it was quieter.

Would agree check how your work does BHs. Legally they should be giving you a pro rata amount, so 60% of the FT bank holiday allowance if you're 0.6 for example. And it goes in with your annual leave allowance. But they might restrict how you take it. In my old job, the part timers weren't allowed to swap a day to avoid having to use a day of leave, but in my current role we can and it's better.

Devonpuff · 26/07/2025 13:35

I guess it depends if you have a career or a job.

I worked Monday, Tuesday, Thursday as that suited my career as easy to catch up in Wednesday goings on on a Thursday and Fridays were quiet and meeting light anyways.

If you aren't focused on career I'd go for 3 days in a row and work Fridays as it will be much quieter.

Judellie · 26/07/2025 13:42

I used to work Wednesday to Friday and it was great, never got that Monday feeling!
Then I had to go full time and now I work a 4 day week with a Thursday off. I wouldn't have picked that but at the time the girl I worked with (and there's only 2 of us) already had Monday and Friday off and it kept being the case that she was shown how to do things as more senior and I was getting left with them.
I quite like my Thursdays off but I don't think anyone should be allowed Monday AND Friday off as where I work you get more holidays for not working Mondays,as it's 'loaded' over the top. Never mind you already have Mondays off - and yes, I know, the pay.
Just for info, we now both work 4 days and are both in on a Friday. Everyone does tend to be in a better mood on a Friday, definitely agree with that

themadhat · 26/07/2025 13:53

I work a Wednesday,Thursday, Friday. I like it because you don’t get the Sunday evening dread. I don’t mind working a Friday because it is usually a shorter day and everyone is in a good mood. I get bank holidays pro rota so another reason to like a Monday because it tops up my part time holiday allowance.

Octonopes · 26/07/2025 14:04

This might not be relevant, but if you have or will soon have school age children, lots of training days fall on a Monday, and they can be harder to get holiday club spaces for. I think last year we had 4 on Mondays, I'd have needed leave for all of them but as I'm off Mondays anyway I could save that leave and get a half term off instead

Mh67 · 26/07/2025 16:36

I see people saying tue wed thur but a lot of companies won't give that as who wants to work money and fri.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/07/2025 16:47

I have worked Tue-Fri, or Wed-Fri for 15 years. I originalky chose Mondays off, as that is when most of my DC's inset days were.

Working Friday is great thoughh!! Generally quieter on the roads and public transport, and happier in the office. No Sunday feeling of gloom. Monday to prep for the week ahead. And I do well out of how my employer deals with BH for part timers. All excellent reasons for not working Mondays.

I work Mondays wednesday and Fridays and flaming love it. I wanted a long weekend but wouldn't benefit from it as my eldest is in school. I get given all thr easier one day tasks and literally in off in off in off. Very happy indeed

I think with my employer and role it will either be a yes or no to part time working rather than specific days.

Day to day there's no difference, the only difference comes with month end which falls on different days so will I don't think any combination of days would make them more likely to approve or reject the request.

Fridays are a good day to be at work.

The atmosphere is more relaxed and everyone is demob happy.

Mondays on the other hand are awful. And meetings are often scheduled on Mondays.

I’d take Monday and Tuesdays off, although you won’t feel the benefit of Bank Holiday Mondays.

Welshmonster · 26/07/2025 23:30

Read your contract to see how they use bank holidays as if they are wrapped up in your prorata holiday then you would need to use a days’s leave in the same way as a full time worker.

Mamabear487 · 27/07/2025 04:29

I work Tues Thurs and Fridays. I wfh Tues and Fridays and love It

autienotnaughty · 27/07/2025 04:44

I’d do Tuesday- Thursday or Wednesday to Friday. But yes check bank hols where I work if you don’t work Mondays you get your pro rata bank hols added to your annual leave to take when you want. But if you do work Monday and do say 8 hours but your pro rata bank hols added pay is for 4 hours you have to use another 4 hours of your annual leave to top up your normal pay. So you end up with less annual leave to use as you want.

RigIt · 25/07/2025 15:24

Be careful taking Monday off. Check how your work does bank holidays. At my old place of work, if you didn’t work Mondays you didn’t get the bank holidays (bank holidays were in addition to annual leave). At my second place of work, you got more bookable holiday (ie to take at a time of your choosing) if you didn’t work Mondays (as leave included bank holidays) So check how they “do” bank holidays for part time staff where you work to see whether it is advantageous for you to work a Monday or not. At my first place of work most part time staff worked Mondays and in my second they didn’t work Mondays!

Yes this is why I went to weds- fri. I use childcare and they shut bank holidays but you still pay, so it would impact my work more than end of the week. As I would consistently need to fudge up back up childcare and essentially pay twice.

WutheringTights · 27/07/2025 13:18

If you have (or will soon have) school age kids then think about inset days. Round here they seem to be mostly at the start or end of holidays so tend to be Mondays or Fridays.

Snackkers · 28/07/2025 12:41

I use to work Monday Tuesday Wednesday. I loved these days. Everyone was in the same mood coming in on a Monday, but the week finished earlier. Having the 2 days before the weekend to get little jobs done, housework etc to make the most of the weekend with DH and kids.

TroysMammy · 28/07/2025 22:24

I work Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday and I love being told on a Wednesday after a couple of hours work "have a lovely weekend". It makes the rest of the week enjoyable and upbeat that it is indeed nearly the weekend.
