Would you consider a counter offer after accepting a new job?

Been offered a new job. Resigned and current place did not take it well as no one else is able to do my particular job. They asked if I would stay if they could match or beat new offer. So far nothing in writing. Wwyd? Current place easier to get to and more money but I'm not sure about the culture which is one of the reasons I handed in notice.

@HyggeTyggee

this may enlighten?

Slightlyconfusedowl · 25/07/2025 00:03

I think it would depend on your reasons for looking for a new job in the first place, but generally I find that if I am looking for a new job there is a good reason, even if I haven’t quite consciously recognised it yet

Pepperama · 25/07/2025 00:05

Yes if it was just going to be a move for better pay/ seniority level. And probably not for a match, just for a slightly better counteroffer

AnSolas · 25/07/2025 00:09

So was it the role or the people or the money or career progression which prompted a job search?

The culture of your current place will not change nor will the distance.

I would be looking for more money rather than a match to stay. It they are on the ball they will train up your replacement so that its a one time deal

The culture of the new place is a gamble but how good are you at reading people because if you are not sure organise time off to do a drop in and meet the team with your new boss.

I found that once I’d decided to look around and been for several interviews etc., I was pretty invested in the change and reeling back and reengaging enthusiastically with the original job would have been very very hard. So no. And as a PP said, there’s always a push factor that makes you start looking or open to being approached.

Try new job, if you don't like it, it sounds like you could go back to your old one within a reasonable time frame. You left for a reason, give it a go

“No one else is able to do my particular job.” Well, that’s on them; it’s not your fault that they’re shit at workforce planning.

Out of interest, what is it about the new job that compensates for the less-convenient location and lower pay? How much more pay are you getting at the moment?

LuckyNumberFive · 25/07/2025 09:02

No. Treat me well enough that I don't want to leave, don't just wait til I've got fed up and found a new job before paying me what I'm worth. I don't want to have to find a new job just to prove I deserve a pay rise every few years.

The new job is somewhere I've worked before so I know that they generally look after their staff. The current job is more money but there's been a couple of red flags for me since being there.

Why did you leave that organisation originally? It sounds like a better fit but I’m always wary of returning to a previous workplace.

LlynTegid · 26/07/2025 15:51

I'd be tempted to ask for a very large increase to make me stay, and/or a longer period of paid notice should I ever be made redundant.

Pay rise! Wish I hadn't.

Fair enough!

isitme111 · 26/07/2025 19:01

I would take the new offer especially if it's a better workplace culture.

HyggeTyggee · 03/08/2025 21:18

Update: I've decided to reject the counter offer and now need to tell current boss which will be very difficult. Not sure what my reason can be other than "thanks for the counter offer but I've decided to go anyway..." I can't put my finger on what it is there, it's just a weird culture. Small business with some big egos, moodiness etc.

Sounds like the best decision. I think work environment is really important.
