Child starting year R childcare

I am a school teacher. I work 3 days a week. My days are changing for September so I am working different days to what I have been. (This was NOT my choice)

My son (4) starts school in September and had a very staggered first two weeks, only in part time. I had the childcare sorted but now my days have changed it is a problem and there are two days we cannot cover.

My boss suggested bringing my DS to school with me, but I would prefer not to? I think it would confuse him. My boss seems reluctant to give me the days off. What can I say?

I cannot source any alternative childcare. All grandparents work the half of the week I do now 🙄 and my husbands annual leave is already all booked for this calendar year.

How long have you been working your previous days. I think if it's more than 2 years then it can't be changed without your agreement

Tell your son's school he will need to go full time on your work days.

This is what I would do.

If you don't have any other childcare, then your choices are he stays at his school or he comes to your school.

I would have thought others would be in and they are doing reduced classes

Headteacher here! Speak to your child’s school and tell them that on those days he will need to come full-time because you have no childcare, explain that you work in a school and say they will understand how inflexible things are for you! In my school, I have stopped reception coming for part time for this reason, it was just a nightmare for working parents

I asked this at my child’s school and they said no…. Wish you were their Headteacher! 😂
OP, do you have any mum friends from baby groups/nursery who you could ask to take him for the day? And maybe offer to take theirs in a similar arrangement on one of your days off? My sympathies, my son had a week of staggered/part time sessions and literally went somewhere different every day depending on who I could find to look after him (he loved it though!).

they can’t say no. Same as they can’t shut on a Wednesday in November for no reason.

As a teacher Im surprised you don’t know Yr. R pupils have a right to start full-time in September.

They really can’t say no – you can take this up with your local authority. It’s just impossible for working parents and I wouldn’t be able to accommodate any of my staff to work part time in September to facilitate their children attending part time! Can you imagine the uproar there would be if your child’s teacher finished at lunchtime for the first two weeks because their child was part time in school – I feel really strongly that school shouldn’t do this unless it is parental preference for their child to have a staggered start.

Why can't dh take unpaid leave or change a couple of days of his booked leave? I'm assuming you were asking for unpaid leave so has your dh asked the same?

OneLemonSwan · 16/08/2025 20:43

Glad your school has done this - it is a nightmare for parents!!!
