Really fucked up in interview for dream job. Feel awful

It was my first interview where I got the questions in advance, and I COMPLETELY overprepared. I'm much better just speaking off the hoof. I really liked that job and know that I would have been brilliant at it.

Feel awful. I have no job and no more applications lined up.

Anyone else in the same boat? Or have you been in the same boat and got a better job down the line?

I need to stop ruminating about the interview and move on.

I've been there! It's horrible. I let myself have a pity party for a couple of days and didn't even look at job adverts, and then went back to the search. Sending you lots of sympathy.

How sure are you that you fucked up? When do you hear about the job?

What will be will be.

Been there op. Did the exact same last week! Totally bummed about it, but it’s done now so need to move on. Going to try and learn from it, this obvs wasn’t the one for me. Back to the search - nothing else for it!

Depends on the other applicants and if they were any good on the day. Dont beat yourself up about it. We all know someone who was crap on the day or so they thought but turned out they were fine!

Kuretake · 15/07/2025 08:02

I've done this. It was a third interview for a job id pretty much been told I'd got (by their head of legal who would have been my line manager) and I just had to meet the CEO. Don't know how I managed to fuck it up so thoroughly but the CEO said he could not work with me and vetoed the appointment.

This was about 15 years ago and I'm afraid it still rankles a bit!

I already know I didn't get it. The recruiter was really surprised at the feedback and was going to try to put a word in for me, but not sure that's achieved anything.

I was the favoured candidate too I think before the interview.

It's partly me being crap at the pre-prepared questions, but the process was rubbish - far too many questions and no two way dialogue and they were awful to me on the day too - visibly looking at watches and looking really bored It just increased my nerves and made me even worse. The recruiter did say ask why I'd want to work with them if they were like that.

I don't have any other interesting roles to apply for.

If you really want it are you able to drop them an email and explain you were really keen to work for them so feel like nerves got the better of you and would it be possible to have another informal chat.

They will probably say no but you have nothing to lose by looking keen.

HelenHywater · 15/07/2025 09:23

Yes I drafted an email and sent it to the recruiter. They were speaking yesterday - the recruiter is very supportive of me and says she knows I'm not like that. I haven't heard yet. It would be nice to get another meeting but I think they prefer one of the other candidates. (To make matters worse and which definitely unsettled me, the visitors book in reception was clear who the other candidates were - it's a small world I work in! )

I had one a bit like this yesterday. I am so much better if I don't prepare the answers in advance. There were bits where I was squinting at my notes and thinking "don't have time to say that, or that, shit" and hurriedly editing what I read out. Next time I get the questions in advance I am just going to print them out, pencil 5 words maximum next to each to remind me what example to use, and that's that.

isitme111 · 15/07/2025 18:19

It is disappointing but the interviewers sound terrible looking at watches etc.. and like the recruiter said would you want to work in a place like that. Put in down to experience and move forward this one wasn't meant to be.

Middlechild3 · 15/07/2025 20:00

No advice but recently in the same boat. Studied hard and passed two assessments to get to interview then completely ballsed it up. It stings because I'd prepped and could have done a lot better. It was the only job that's really interested me in ages too. You aren't alone.
