Working in notice period - why do people take it so personally?

I'm in the final week of my notice period and truly can't believe how cold some of my seniors have been towards me for the last 8 weeks.

I worked here for 10 years and one of my managers literally hasn't said a single word to me since I notified them I was leaving.

is this really normal? It's been a long time since I moved jobs but i've never experienced anything like it. I was feeling quite torn about the move but it's definitely cemented my decision but also not really made me want to work on my handover any harder than I need to. I'm a manager myself and when my staff have moved on I've always celebrated that for them.

Congrats on leaving.

As to any handover work etc - I wouldnt do a damn thing.

Fuck em, they can wallow in their own shit once you leave. Forget and move on.

Yeah, people get really weird at the idea that people might want to leave and work elsewhere.

When I left my last job, the atmosphere was so cood and I was bullied so badly that I just never went back - got myself signed off sick and never saw any of them again. Fuckers.

I think we assume that everyone at work is nice to us because they value you as a person.

Which will often be true, but there are some people who only value you because of your role. So if you are leaving you aren’t important/relevant any longer.

There will also be people who arent brave enough to jump but might like to so they are a bit envious.

And you know, some people are just arses.

Best of luck in your new role.

I think it’s a bit like the end of a relationship in a way, people become a cold. They’re the idiots though as it’s never good to burn bridges.

I had a boss who was absolutely explicit about the fact that when someone had resigned she wouldn’t want to speak to or see them again. Nuts. What kind of self-absorbed nonsense is that? Fortunately, at this point, you get to give zero fucks.

That's quite creepy, people are allowed to move on! But I've experienced that before.

Thanks everyone. I find it all truly bizarre, I’m not quite 40 - which, going by the retirement ages these days means I’ve got around 30 more years work left. Surely they didn’t think I’d be staying there for that long 😂

only today and a half day tomorrow to get through!
