My brain drops out when feeling anxious at work..

I started a new job six months ago and recently was asked to go to another office to take minutes. I went and tried to follow the instructions they’d said, switch on the monitor, blah blah…and I couldn’t get the monitor working. I feel so embarrassed as I had another meeting to attend and the same thing happened. Then a manager had to get up and they do it! It’s my job but my mind goes blank.
Every time I’m anxious I do stupid things. I’m worried they think I’m an idiot. I can’t even remember to click a switch to on for a monitor!

Do you have a manager or mentor, someone who has your back? Even a colleague. Worthwhile talking to them about how you feel - they can either reassure you or help you come up with strategies which you can employ when you feel anxious to try and work through it. Are there bits of your job you are happy with?

It is horrible when this happens. It is easy to be overwhelmed when everything is new to you.

When you realise this 'brain switch off' is happening, take a time out. Say you need the loo, or a drink and go somewhere quiet. Take slow breaths, counting to four as you breath in and blow out a big breath. Count backwards from 100. Then try some simple sums to see if your brain is turned back on. Panic turns off the logical side of your brain but this routine will calm you down and get you back.

Do you have a notebook and pen? Writing down instructions means you look sensible and efficient and gives you something to do while you are processing new instructions.

I can really sympathise with you, as I’ve been feeling this way also. I’m six weeks into a new job and there’s been so much information to take in. New systems that I’ve never used before, and new bits of IT that again I’ve just never used.

Ended up yesterday with me speaking to manager and I’m so glad I did. Firstly it got it out in the open, and secondly she was incredibly reassuring and supportive.

As per post above, speak to your manager, mentor or buddy and explain you are feeling a little overwhelmed currently.
