Movíng abroad to pursue a career

I am thinking about moving abroad to do a 3 year apprenticeship that does not exist in the UK. The idea would also be to stay on in the country after the apprenticeship to work as job opportunities in the UK would be limited although there are similar jobs around.

I loved and worked in the country for three years when I was younger so I already speak the language and know the country and the laws. Will need an EU passport but I am entitled and it's just a matter of doing the application. Will be mid forties by the time I make the move.

Can anyone put there share their experience of moving abroad later in life in order to pursue a career? I have the feeling that I am looking at it all through rose tinted glasses and there must be some catch that I am not seeing.

Are you eligible to do the apprenticeship ? How easy is it to get a job afterwards?
What would happen should you fall ill or have a serious accident ?

I am eligible for the apprenticeship and there is a huge shortage of skilled workers in the area. It is common now for businesses to sponsor visas for non EU citizens without language skills to do the apprenticeship so I imagine I would be a strong candidate. A trade job so not something I can see being made obsolete by technology.

As an employee and resident I would be paying in to the tax system and be covered by public health insurance so any health issues would be taken care of. Any workplace accidents would be covered by the employers insurance. It's a country considered to have a better health system than the UK so not something I am worried about.

Please tell what the apprenticeship is, im really interested?! I think it sounds like a great opportunity and will future proof your career as you get older.

I think I have made it sound more exciting than it is by saying it doesn't exist in the UK. There are things very similar. something along the lines of professional Yorkshire's pudding maker but obviously with a traditional food related to that country.

Do it, why not!

Sounds like an absolute BLAST! Go for it - you only live once!

I think it sounds a great idea! Only 1 warning: I've been the only woman and the only foreigner in a work place, and it was much tougher than I expected. Either one of those I could and have coped with. If you add in only apprentice above 25, you might find yourself feeling very lonely, especially if you're living in a small town. Hopefully you're a bit tougher than me, but make sure you have a plan for building a support network.
