Wanting to leave midwifery but what can I do instead?

I have been a midwife for 10 years, I’ve hated it for a while now and I’m seriously considering what I could do instead.

Has anyone left midwifery? What did you do instead ? did you take a big pay cut? Any ideas of what I could do?

I work part time and the shifts I have work for me but the pressure and anxiety is just too much.

Thanks

What parts of midwifery do you like or dislike? For example, could you be a Doula or train as Health Visitor. Or do you need to get out into something totally new?

If you work in the NHS, look at having some free coaching from the NHS Leadership Academy. I worked with a coach when my organisation was quite turbulent & she really helped me with finding something new, the applications & the interview process.
You will have a huge list of transferable skills that someone else might see more clearly than you. Good luck.

Now a civil servant

Initially worked for the NMC. Then onto another regulator (non healthcare), then civil service.

The pay is less than what I could have been earning but I work 9-5, no stress, no body fluids, no being bitten, no nasty politics, toilet breaks whenever.

I know people who have gone into things like children and family work for charities

Thanks for all of your responses.

I think I liked my job when I could do it properly but now the demand is too much, it’s a lot of pressure, a lot of anxiety. Most shifts no breaks, getting off late and not getting anytime back. I did think about sensory classes but I feel that’s too much of a gamble and I feel I wouldn’t get much of a wage from it from what I have read. I just want something where I don’t have the stress and anxiety, don’t mind a slight pay cut for that but still need a decent enough wage.

I’ve been thinking about leaving for years but I couldnt think of anything I’d be good at and then talk myself out of it but the jobs getting worse and I’m fearful of doing something wrong.

Sorry for the blabbing reply and thanks again for responding.

What about academia? Plenty of research to be done.

when I did my PhD I worked with many nurses/pharmacists/dr’s moving out of the clinical world into research.

if you don’t want the PhD/research associate/lecturer route there are always clinical trials and clinical research associates.

I have two DFs who have moved on from the labour wards. One is in Clinic and is in smoking cessation.
