Expenses query

EggandStress · 19/06/2025 07:08

Morning!
For the first time, I’m having to use my car for work.
I’ve submitted my first expenses claim and have had a message to say that I have to show proof that my car is insured for business use.
I doubt it is (DH organises car insurance and he’s still asleep).

If I need to update the cover, presumably it will cost extra. Depending on how much that is, can I claim that additional payment on expenses too?

Mine doesn’t cost any extra for business use and you may find it’s standard with your cover. Worth asking if you can claim it but I’ve never been able to

Woah, do not use your car for work without business insurance- if you’re in an accident it renders your insurance invalid.

I’ve never known an employer where you can claim business insurance costs back though, just petrol

Mine doesn't cost extra. We all claim travel expenses for home visits cross county. But You do usually have to ask for it when you renew your policy or the NHS won't pay our expenses. It's standard for anyone claiming expenses.

Where I work if you use your own car you can't claim for insurance costs. If you don't have business insurance then people are expected to use a hire car.

It's got to do with the company claiming tax back from HMRC (maybe that's not true but it's what I've been told).

It did cost me to add it on but pennies! Call your insurance ASAP!

My employer has a third party validation process. If you don't have the proper insurance you don't get paid your mileage.

It's not really a case of "adding" business mileage so much as telling your insurer how many of your annual miles will be related to business. So I have 6,000 miles and cover myself by saying 1,000 of those will be business related.

Cost is usually insignificant unless you are driving a £60k car or something.

Cost my DD around £7 to add business.

EggandStress · 19/06/2025 07:30

Thanks all ☺️ so helpful. DH is awake and thinks business use may be included but will check today and add it if not.
I was worried it would cost me loads but you’ve reassured me.

If the company are paying you the HMRC rate of 45p per mile then this is supposed to cover things like this

ToddlerSleep · 19/06/2025 07:33

As part of my insurance renewal I added business and it cost an additional £3. I did not have to specify how many miles were business vs non business. If you are adding mid-policy term rather than at renewal, you may be charged an admin fee as well.
