Restructure and pay cut - can they do this?

My organisation have gone through a restructure, cutting our team from 4.6FTE to 1.6FTE which is stressful enough as we now all have to apply for the one remaining full time role, (aside from the part time person going on maternity leave as their role is protected) but they have also lowered the pay grade for that one role, so essentially the person will be doing 3x work on less money.

Firstly - can they do that? Secondly, should I even bother applying, or would you be looking elsewhere? It’s a 4k pay cut for the same job title.

Yes they can do it

and £4k means nothing unless you tell the total salary

Blinkagain · 18/06/2025 16:00

As for bothering to apply, well yes I would because i would be confident id get it in my current job and employer

Are you thinking unlikely successful anyway?

CanOfMangoTango · 18/06/2025 16:16

I'd apply anyway and see it as practice for the better paid job you'll also be applying for

Clashofthetitans · 18/06/2025 16:16

@Blinkagain 40k down to 36k, but that’s top of the bracket to top of the new bracket.

Also, really unsure - we all do the same job, pretty on par, I’ve been there the shortest amount of time so not overly confident.

I’ve been applying for other roles since I found out and had a few phone calls so hoping for a back up, but I will apply for it anyway.

I’ve just never been in this situation before. We unfortunately don’t have a good savings pot, I am not entitled to stat redundancy due to length of service and we have a toddler so a bit of an uncertain time.

I'd appmy but I'd be looking for a differnet role in the meantime.

HermioneWeasley · 18/06/2025 16:17

In terms of “can they do that” I’m afraid it depends on specifics. Would you rather take the role on less money or be made redundant?

Shortest time?

id presume you’re out

Clashofthetitans · 18/06/2025 16:18

@HermioneWeasley my job is just really full on as it is, let alone taking on the workload of 3 others. But you’re right, I would rather have a job than none.

Hi OP, are you in the public sector? When I've worked for a LA and they've done this, they have protected the person's salary for 2 years. How long have you been there and are you better off holding out for redundancy?

LIZS · 18/06/2025 18:41

Presumably that relects the grade at which the new role has been assessed. Is the jd different? They might protect the current salary of the appointee if higher but that means no payrises until it catches up over time.

Avidreader12 · 18/06/2025 18:54

If this is the civil service yes reapply for the role.

Clashofthetitans · 18/06/2025 19:11

@LIZS if anything, the JD now reflects more work. It’s charity sector. Just surprising they are expecting more work for less money, but funding is obviously an issue.

Thanks for the advice - I will reapply, but continue to look elsewhere also.

Not unusual for charity sector ime

In that case I wouldn’t argue that they can’t

reversegear · 18/06/2025 19:19

This is a way they can get you to leave, it’s fairly brutal but the job market is so hard I’d apply.

FinallyHere · 18/06/2025 19:43

your best bet is to get a better job

what you actually do depends mostly on how easy that would be for you.
