dc now gcse(ish) ages. Dh high earner. I’m a lawyer with 2 offers to consider (currently not working as recently made redundant)

  1. Full time role BIG salary
  2. part time LOW salary

I’m keen on option 2 as it offers a 3 day week, great holiday entitlement, should be relatively stress free job with good pension, Pay is very low though.

wwyd? Thoughts/opinions/experiences please.

do gcse/a’level teens need you around? Are you glad you went part-time (obviously appreciate this is a privilege to have this as a viable option). Is it a good time to go part time? Or, conversely, should I go for high pressured full time role & get the big bucks?

I'd say yes they still need some support. With understanding bits of the syllabus, researching and applying for uni courses, friendship issues, just generally making life easier having meals ready, giving lifts out, teaching to drive. Providing a comfortable home environment for studying.

I worked full time but in a flexi hours job mostly from home so it worked. But if I worked full time in a very demanding role an hour away, I think it would have been hard.

You want to give them the best shot. The grades make the world of difference to what they can do.

So I'd go for part time.

Seems like your veering towards job 2 so I would say go for it. When you say low pay do you mean it's low because it's part time hours? Good annual leave, pension and less stress are all positive's. I found it useful to be around for GCSE/A level teens. Any chance you could look at full time again in 2/3 years once your kids finish school.

Thank you both for replying - it’s really helped me. I want to take the part time option but just really needed reassurance I wasn’t making a big mistake - I feel very reassured now. Thanks

Would you be able to go for a big salary job in a few years once they're at uni?

blancbleu · 15/06/2025 17:33

Yes - I think my new plan is to take the part time role and aim to go full time again in 4 or so years… seems like the best way forward.
