Teaching

I’m beginning to loose hope. I have had a few teaching interviews and lost out each time to an ECT. Every time they have sent the experienced teachers home after the teaching section of the interview and once they sent home the female candidates keeping only the men (deputy even let slip them wanted a man). I know schools can’t just advertise for an ECT but I’m beginning to loose hope. I don’t know what to do, please help

I'm assuming you've already considered supply work? If not, I'd get in contact with a few agencies now and get into their books. You can still apply for roles and if you get something, just tell the agencies you're not available for work. If you don't find something permanent, at least you've got a plan B.

Unfortunately though, this situation is unsurprising and all too common. Budgets are so stretched atm and experienced teachers don't seem to be valued for their wealth of knowledge and years of practice.

My school have just announced that, because a member of staff is due to start maternity leave, they're condensing the classes from 6 year groups down to 5 to avoid paying a mat cover. This will then lead to long term redundancy.

It's an absolute shambles! 😩

I have considered supply and will probably have to go that route unfortunately. I am just not a fan of supply work so was hoping to avoid it. Teaching has to be one of the few jobs where experience is not valued

A colleague of mine started on supply and was offered a permanent role despite being M6, she had been turned down for several interviews and lost out to an ECT before she went to supply.

Unless you’re SLT, teaching is not kind to older teachers.

It really isn’t! It is becoming very disheartening

I am severely dyslexic and make each employer aware of this. I own it with the children and am
open about the fact I will make mistakes. I hope
you aren’t in a position where you have to work with others with people skill like that.

It's true. Older teachers who have worked in a school for years get managed out for trumped up reasons. It tends to happen with a change of management and they fill the vacancies with ECTs.
