Casual contracts - are they time limited?

My DS has had a casual contract with an organisation (0 hours but works every week for at least 10 hours - most weeks more like 16-20). He has worked for them for 18 months and they randomly gave out some 'proper' contracts to some of the people who are universally acknowledged as being less good workers but have done more hours over the last year. No interviews for these contracted roles and literally handed out based on the hours worked. My ds is still at college so obviously is unable to work as many hours as some of the other people there.

Does anyone know if this is normal / allowed? And also, is there a rule whereby, once you've been on a 0 hours contract for a set period of time you should be offered a proper contract? Thanks

No, there isn’t a law in that area (at the moment) - a zero hours contract can be indefinite.

The only closest thing is that an employee on a fixed term contract will be deemed permanent after four years, but this isn’t fixed term.

Thanks. That makes sense. I think I might have been thinking of the fixed term contract thing.
