Can someone help with ideas for work around children in school hrs/holidays??
I am an older mum and currently I work nights however its absolutely killing me and to top it off im struggling with the symptoms of perimenopause. Can someone give me advice on jobs I can do during the day that can work around kids?? TIA from a desperate mum.

How old are you?!

how old are the children?

single mum?

DongDingBell · 07/06/2025 07:43

Can you find a job doing what you do now, but on days?

Upsetbetty · 07/06/2025 07:49

Does the school have an afterschool service and/or breakfast club? What would your daytime hours need to be?

I guess any job in the world of academia is more likely to be term time only, so teaching assistant, school or university administrator? Retail work if the shifts are ok. Barmaid or waitress if you can do evenings.

But honestly I’d just get a 9-5 and sort out some wraparound care, that’s what most people do.

I am 42, my children are 2x 12yr olds and 1x 8yr old. I'm not a single mum but dad works silly hrs, he helps out as much as he can during the day but is limited to what he can do, he cant change jobs because he earns far more than I do.

What are the dc school hours does it have afterschool and breakfast club?

What job do you do currently? I think that would be the first thing. If it is in healthcare/homecare, then perhaps check availability of jobs in that field that would cover school hours/wraparound care hours. Ditto retail. Can't blame you about finding nights hard: I was fine doing nights when I was younger but at 44, they're a killer!

ETA....sorry, just saw your post about being an HCA.

Would you be able to look at HCA jobs in clinics, GP surgeries or community? (I'm a ward nurse so understand the difficulties of juggling shifts with childcare!)

School hrs are 8am until 4:30pm, they go to afterschool clubs already so that I can sleep during the day before my night shift, its just holidays are also an issue for someone to look after them during the day, my youngsters I might add is AuADHD and struggles with clubs

This might be a tall order...particularly with how the NHS is at the moment(!)...staff bank, so you pick shifts in term time only, and in clinics (nicer hours than wards).

Upsetbetty · 07/06/2025 13:54

Retail jobs may suit?

itsgettingweird · 07/06/2025 14:05

Ta in school. Or school admin etc.

Fingerpie · 07/06/2025 14:08

So he earns “far more” than you?

well in that case throw some money at the problem.

There’s amazing holiday clubs out there (my son did his junior open water PADI with one!). So start hunting!

how many night shifts do you do?

Fingerpie · 07/06/2025 14:08

Are you looking for childcare overnight? Is that the issue?

There’s loads of brilliant clubs out there
pricey but worth it and usually early and late drop off and collection for a little extra

if you husband earns much more than you, spend it on baking your life easier
