Help me Choose between two Job Offers

I know ultimately I have to make a choice - but please help! What would you choose

JOB 1- 58k. Work remotely. However the policy could potentially change then I am lumbered with travelling 3 hours back and forth each way

JOB2 - £61k. Go into London offices twice a week - closer to home than Job 1

I am torn between the long term sustainability of Job2 since it's closer to home but Job 1 is more flexible

What do you think.....

Job 2

If you prefer job 1 can you negotiate and ask that it’s put in your contract that you will work from home permanently? If they won’t - job 2.

Loopytiles · 04/06/2025 12:42

What’s the commuting time for job 2?

hardhatready · 04/06/2025 12:42

if I wanted the remote job I’d be asking them to put my place of work as remote with only occasional travel to the office - and define that - once a month/quarter etc into your contract so they can’t change the goal posts. However though i love the flexibility of remote work i go stir crazy alone at home all the time so personally would choose the job closer to home

Job 2

It depends on what makes you think the policy will change on job 1. Could you scope this further to find out how likely it is. You could also ask for a remote contract. We would be unlikely to hire someone 3hrs away if we were likely to be asking them into the office

Do you want to work remote or hybrid?

The salary increase with job 2 would likely be swallowed up by the commute costs.

It sounds as if you might prefer 1 but feel 2 is the less risky option (if going to the office is seen as risk)

What are the terms and conditions like? Which has the better pension, health insurance, sick leave, maternity leave?

Which job has the most opportunities for promotion or will give you transferable skills?

Job 2

jackstini · 04/06/2025 15:53

How close is job 2 - a 2 hour commute or 30 mins?

The difference in salary is negligible - what are other benefits like; pension, holiday, parental leave etc?

How important is working remotely to you? (I would never now take a job which wasn’t!)

Which job would you enjoy more - people, variety, travel, progression..?

the jobs are similar in benefits - the remote one, job1 has slightly more annual leave...

Job 2 - is a one hour commute from home, one train away.

I do enjoy working remotely but not beholden to needing to be full time remote

I would do job 1 - unless you have an inside track it is very likely to move to office based?

Get ‘Remote’ in your contract as your standard location of work
