No advice on the move sorry however there's a good Cs board on reddit that has loads of helpful advice.

There's actually two but one is more active than the other.

Yes, all you need to do is look on a Civil jobs and apply, as simple as that! You can set up alerts for the sort of roles you’re interested in or places that are commutable!

Obviously depending where you work it can be ‘dead man’s shoes’ if you want to stay in the same location/Team but it depends what you want to do!

From my experience the CS support progression so I would say apply for roles you like the sound of as soon as you can after probation. Is there a mentoring scheme you can join ? Talk to your team lead they should be able to give you some advice or point you in the right direction.

They will put you through apprenticeships and are really keen to do so, although it sounds like you are already extremely qualified for an AO role.
Lots of departments are on a recruitment freeze currently but you can put on job alerts for EO roles that are advertised on the civil service careers website.

The most active sub is called TheCivilService. I'm sure there's one called civil service UK too.

If you want a promotion you have to demand it and also work harder than the rest. But also maintain that harder work.

sandgrown · 28/05/2025 01:52

If you are prepared to move around look at fast stream . Go to a Civil Service Live event to see all the various departments and to book a spot mentoring session.

That's not how it works in the civil service.

Congrats OP.

Firstly, make sure you are registered on CS Jobs with your CS email address so you get the internal job openings, as well as external. Get registered for job alerts for EO and HEO roles - you'll get an email every morning with vacancies. You can then start applying.

You might also like to look at Faststream application as well - can be done from inside the CS as well as externally (there used to be a separate internal route for existing CS but I think that might not exist anymore?)

In my department, you would probably raise some eyebrows at looking for promotion after only 6months, but definitely by a year it would be understandable given your background.

Are you able to move location? Depending on where you are now, location is also something to consider as the more flexible you can be, the more chances you have at applying.

Your current department intranet should also have advice on interview techniques. Obviously you've got into the CS so you have some familiarity, but refining your examples, STARR techique etc.

You could also look at getting a mentor or doing one of the CS programmes - i think its called something like Crossing Thresholds or Beyond Boundaries? Its for more junior staff to support them to become more senior. We have info about all these on our intranet but if you Google, you might also find some general info, or you could ask your Learning and Development person in your HR team.

Oh yes and @sandgrown's idea about Civil Service Live is a great one. The London event is coming up in July. There are usually big marketplaces with lots of department stands and you can talk to different people about different roles. It also counts to one of your learning days per year.
