How do people find jobs these days?

I'm being made redundant later this year, so need to look for a new job.

It's been over twenty years since I had to do this - what do people do now? Is LinkedIn essential?

I was thinking of staying to look in July, but I wouldn't be available to start until October.

gov.uk?

plenty of places don’t expect immediate start. Our notice period is 3 months. Sorry about your redundancy, must be a worrying time, good luck with the job hunting.

Find a job

Search and apply for jobs in Great Britain using ‘Find a job’.

I really would recommend LinkedIn and to start reaching out to people (hate that term but couldn’t think of anything else) - I’ve been approached directly quite a bit on there and people really do want to help where they can by recommending you to others. It can be a tricky market at the moment so I would recommend using your network to its fullest.

People in my area seem to just go onto Facebook and type “any jobs going atm?” and then presumably wait for the offers to come flooding in.

I wouldn’t recommend that approach but it seems to happen all the time and I do wonder if anyone finds any success with it.

I've been using LinkedIn mostly along with some sector specific job boards and also the websites of specific organisations I'd like to work for.

Do some research into CVs though. The fashion for what CVs are expected to contain (and not contain) has changed in the last 20 years and what you think of as a good CV may not work for you.

ZebraPrintt · 27/05/2025 19:52

Indeed. Or Google jobs in your area, it seems to bring up every job from every site

It gets harder to find work as we age. But experience usually beats qualifications.

Eminybob · 28/05/2025 03:21

LinkedIn definitely. If all your experience is in your profile you may get approached for roles or at the least will have jobs recommended for you automatically.
I don’t recommend applying via linked in, I did that once and didn’t hear anything, then went directly via the companies website and heard from their recruiter straight away.

Ok, so it sounds like it's worth spending some time on LinkedIn.

@Fitzcarraldo353 good point about CV's. I'm not sure mine was great 20 years ago, but I started off as a temp in my job and was made permanent so a CV didn't really come into it.

@Vroooooom thank you. It is worrying, my biggest worry is how DS will take it as he's autistic and this could mean major changes. At the moment I'm incredibly lucky to work from home for a very supportive employer who gives me a lot of flexibility in hours. If I end up 9-5 in an office it rather screws up our carefully but precariously balanced life.
