Anyone here working as a GP Assistant?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone here is working as a GP Assistant or knows someone currently in the role or training for it?

I’ve applied for a few of these roles recently and have an interview tomorrow. I’ve worked in admin within primary care before and really enjoy the structured, secretarial side of things – managing referrals, supporting clinicians, handling notes, etc.

What’s drawn me to this role is the opportunity to expand into clinical tasks too. From what I’ve seen, the training covers things like phlebotomy, ECGs, blood pressure, wound care, height/weight checks, and routine health reviews – which sounds brilliant. At first, I thought it was like an HCA role, but it seems more focused on supporting the GP specifically, combining clinical tasks with more structured admin.

It seems like a really good stepping stone with solid long-term prospects, especially if you already have experience on the admin side and are keen to build up clinical skills gradually.
Would love to hear from anyone currently doing the role, training for it, or working alongside a GP Assistant.

Also, I haven’t interviewed in a while — if anyone knows what questions might come up, I’d really appreciate any tips!
Thanks! 😊

No idea about the role. As I’m a nurse. But Safeguarding, and importance of confidentiality will almost certainly come up.

I’m not currently a GP Assistant myself, but I work closely with a few in our practice, so I can give you a good idea of what to expect. You’ve summed up the role really well.

It’s a brilliant blend of admin and clinical responsibilities. GP Assistants act as a real bridge between the admin team and clinical staff, helping everything run smoothly.

Day-to-day work usually includes:

  • Processing referrals and managing clinical correspondence
  • Taking patient observations (BP, pulse, height/weight, etc.)
  • Performing ECGs and phlebotomy (after training)
  • Assisting with audits and recalls
  • Supporting GPs during consultations or home visits
  • Helping with patient health reviews and care planning

It’s a great progression if you’re from an admin background, Especially since many GPAs later move into HCA or even Nursing Associate roles.

For your interview, they’ll likely ask:

  • What you know about the GP Assistant role
  • Why you want to transition from admin to clinical work
  • How you handle confidentiality and data protection
  • Examples of teamwork or managing workload under pressure
  • How you’d support a GP or the wider practice team
  • What you understand about patient-centred care

It’s also worth reading the official NHS GP Assistant framework if you haven’t already. It explains the structure and competencies they focus on during training.

You sound like a perfect fit given your admin experience and enthusiasm for expanding your skills that balance is exactly what practices look for.

Good luck with your interview tomorrow! You’ve got this.
