I’m considering giving up law (commercial) and doing something else before retiring in the next 6 years or so.
Not sure which area yet but something that might be interesting and not grinding like legal practice.

If you made the change how did you go about it and how are you finding it?

I left law and joined the civil service - there are numerous opportunities to enter the civil service as a lawyer, and there are also alternative professions and careers that might suit you. The range of work is enormous and flexible working is widely available.

Two semi retired solicitor friends; one became a notary and the other a non executive director. Both are very part time and seem to be happy.

NED seems a popular route.

Yes, I'd say so. I enjoy my job and I like the people I work with. There are lots of opportunities to move around and try different things, whether you wanted to stay doing a legal job (lawyers are expected to move around different practice areas in the civil service) or try policy, strategy, compliance...
