Just been made redundant

Very anxious about the future.

Have been given 3 months notice so at least a bit of time to look for a new job. But at the moment, am feeling very low.

I've been made redundant twice, both times I got new, better paid, jobs before the three months and both jobs were way better than the ones I left, whilst it seems awful now I hope you have a similar story to tell down the line (maybe not being made redundant twice) but certainly about a better, better paid job coming out of it.

I was made redundant from a job I’d been in for almost 30 years at 55 . I was both devastated and terrified. I started my new job two weeks after I left my old job . Over 30 of us were made redundant from that business. All of us are completely happy in our new posts . Hope that helps take some of the worry away .

@ACynicalDad @Vicliz24 thank you for your encouragement.

@mechanicalpencil

I've has two redundancies. Both times it's led me down new paths and overall a happier life.
Try and see it as an opportunity. You have 3 months with a salary still plus I assume a redundancy payment so quite a nice cushion in terms of finding a new job.
Good luck

Sending hugs op. Take your time don't panic you have some time. You can do this 💪🏻

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 15/05/2025 20:30

Sorry to hear about that. It happened to me and I was devastated, but it turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me because it gave me the freedom to take a step back and think about what I actually wanted to do with my life.

Take some time to nurse your wounds, but don't worry... you will be OK.

@Ted27 yes, at least I have the 3 months for which I’m grateful. Hopefully statutory redundancy but the company is basically bankrupt so not sure how that works as there just isn’t any money.

Don't be too down OP. I had the same last August and was thinking the worst but I found another good role within 7 weeks.

Start browsing Indeed and Total Jobs now. Get your profiles updated and put the word out through friends and ex-colleagues on LinkedIn. Look at contracts and maternity reliefs as well. With luck you might be able to bank some of your payoff. Good luck

I’ve been made redundant. It was utterly devastating. But I successfully retrained to a profession I love, am now very senior at and would never have had the courage to do if I hadn’t been chucked out. Good luck OP 🍀

You can get statutory redundancy from government if company is bankrupt.

Your rights if your employer is insolvent

If your employer is 'insolvent' this means it cannot pay its debts - your rights if this happens, claiming money owed to you, where to get advice

I had this last year too.

May I recommend this book (and other resources on this site?)

I went through that last year, it's devastating but I'll echo the previous posters. It was a really good thing for me. I've found a new career in a brand new industry and some really fantastic colleagues.

Everyone from my old work has moved on to a variety of different jobs and have said how much happier they are.

You will be ok too.

Dontjudgeme101 · 16/05/2025 07:40

I am so sorry to hear that op. 💐💐💐

mechanicalpencil · 16/05/2025 11:01

Thank you so much for all your messages, I can't tell you how much it has helped these past 24 hours.

Yesterday, it was such a shock and I ended up crawling back into bed and pulling the covers over my head.

Your positive messages have given me a new outlook and I am going to do my best to move forward.

Thanks again for sharing.

Apply for job seekers allowance also. It’s paid for up to 6 months but helps! I was made redundant end March. Got new job offer 2 weeks later and starting next week. Think about what skills you have and how you could apply it to any job you think you could do. The 3 month break has done me good coming from a toxic manager! Glad to be away from the place!

Robinredface · 16/05/2025 14:25

Try to see it as an opportunity to reassess your life and career. I got made redundant 3 years ago and decided to pursue a new career that I'd always thought I would love. Three years later I earn more than 3x what I did in my old job and am so glad it happened otherwise I wouldn't have made the change.
