Fit note

Hi,

Please may I get some help on what’s best for a fit note as I’m being asked what date would I like it from (I’m currently on a ward with the more elderly patients)

After working a shift I landed up in A&E had surgery on a non work day and been in hospital ever since.

I’m sure you have to disregard the first week due to self-certification?

A junior doctor intends to discuss on ward rounds today, I just wanted it to prove a condition, well less scare my employer.

The hospital also keep sometimes referring to it as a sick note (I just thought they were getting mixed up) but the nhs page I’ve viewed makes mention to sick note.

I thought the old process was sick note.

You can disregard the first week as a self cert however if you have had surgery the hospital will usually only give you a fit note ( sick note) from the day you were admitted until the day you were discharged- you will then see your GP for the extra time you need off- depends on your recovery/surgery but likely you will need to submit multiple sick notes to work

It may depend on what surgery you’ve had and how long the doctor thinks it’ll take to recover? You can absolutely request something more specific if you have something in mind r.e length of time or what is stated on the note.
I had a tonsillectomy and was originally signed off for 2 weeks, end of the first week I was readmitted to hospital with severe infection and after being in for 2 days on IV antibiotics, the doctors on the ward round then gave me another note for a further two weeks as they discharged me so the note doesn’t necessarily end when they discharge you, they based it on how long I’d need to reasonably recover as well as the fact I was back on strong medicine.
Wishing you a speedy and restful recovery x

Thank you, I got told yesterday I’d likely head to plastics after they removed a ball of fluid that shouldn’t have been on my leg and now part of the foot hasn’t cleared up like they expected so it’s skin graphs likely which going forward I’d have holiday to cover me. Recovery likely to take some time I keep hearing as much as I’m quite determined.

There is also possible diabetic complications in the mix where I got on pathway to remission and seem to have lost the plot so I understand I’m at fault.

Painfully I am fixed term until Jan 26 and before I went off due to praise received my Manager had wanted to support me in progression to an internal dept that it was felt I may be well suited to - I’d just be really happy to keep my original job.

Current situation Employer has thought it best not to talk until after discharge from hospital.

Added Insomnia issues which I think the GP may be expected to pick up.

Sick note and fit note are the same thing

First week is covered by self cert

If the hospital WILL give you a fit note future dated that would be helpful.

If the hospital will only give you a fit note up until the date you leave hospital you'll need to contact the GP (usually online consult form) and ask for a 2 or 4 week fit note to be text to you

Then continue asking GP for a fit note until you're ready to goback to work

Thank you so very much, I did rather think I’ll be seeing a lot of the GP surgery once out.

This. Although technically you self certify for the first week it won’t hurt to cover it. Once you are discharged gp will continue to issue one.

CoastalCalm · 15/05/2025 09:20

The hospital will give you a fit/sick note to cover an anticipated period of treatment and recovery you can then ask GP to extend if needed or if you recover earlier they can issue a fit note stating you have been reviewed and able to return to work with or without some adjustments for example they could say fit to return to work if working at home or shorter days

RebelliousHoping · 15/05/2025 11:22

Thank you. They might say I’m in to closer a situation to some of the calls I’ll be answering but that is what I’d like to break my day up.

I’ve grieved for the swimming pool I might not see in a while thanks to picc line. I can’t lay and stew.

In the words of Oasis I want to start a revolution or two from this/my bed.

Last time I was in hospital for something different it was fairly easy as I went in whilst sick and under a note cover and then the GP took back over. I just wish things were as clear as back then.

Sorry this turned out sorry over nothing.

Discharged with fit note to cover next 2 weeks - written so longed winded it must have taken 2 days to fill in.

Said to my employer I really want to get back to work as much as I could and they seem fine to get me back there x thank you xx
