question about maternity pay when working part time

currently on mat leave. worked fulltime b4 for nhs who have great mat pay
wandering about if have another dc after returning to work part time after ds1.
how does pay work? for instance if i return just for 2 days and my take home pay is less than smp, would i get half pay AND smp, or simply half pay? or equal to smp, altough i earn less normally?
if i do end up with less than smp, how is that fair when i believe non working mums get smp?{hmm}
any nhs emplyees out there?

non working mums don't get SMP as far as I know

Can't really help otherwise - I only got SMP - but my understanding is that you get SMP or 90% of your weekly take home - whichever is the smaller amount. I suspect the NHS top this up a bit though.

It's what TigerFeet said.

You won't get SMP and contractual maternity pay too. Your SMP is 90% of pay for the first six weeks then 90% of pay or £117.18 (gross) per week (whichever is lower) until week 39.

If the NHS enhances the maternity pay then you will get that (not SMP in addition) UNLESS the enhanced pay would actually be lower than SMP, in which case you get SMP.

SO.

Say your gross pay per week is £100 and the NHS normally pay half pay (I'm just guessing) after the first six weeks. Half pay would be £50 per week. This is less than you would get on the SMP calculation (90% of £100 is £90) so you would get SMP at £90.

Now say your gross pay is £300. Half of that would be £150 per week. This is more than the SMP, so it is what you would get.

crackpotdog it doesn't seem right does it? I'm pretty sure there was something dodgy going on there - I know a few SAHMs and none of them got SMP.

It's supposed to be there to replace a wage

I got into a fight on here once with a SAHM who wanted to go back to work specifically to get SMP

Definitely something dodgy

(sorry Cod I know SAHM's work - I come to my (paid) job for a rest most days)

Maybe the woman you are talking about was self employed and worked from home part time or something. I know several people around here who assume I am a SAHM because they see me around with DD in town and at various groups but I do actually do paid work around 3-3.5 days a week (two full days plus time during naps, after bed time etc.)
Because I'm self employed I don't get the 6 weeks at 90% but I do get the rest at a flat rate.

You don't qualify for SMP if you don;t earn more than the threshold of so much per week (can't remember how much...) so you would get Maternity Allowance from the government instead.

Anything paid by a company/organisation over and above the statutory can have a variety of conditions placed on it.
