Part time professional jobs

Hello
Looking for advice for finding a part time job (approx 40k salary) the part time roles within my field and area on the job sites are few and far between. How do people find them? Are you applying for full time jobs and then negotiating a part time position during the recruitment stage? - if this is the case, what stage do you bring up? Interview? Before?

It’s incredibly difficult to find quality, professional jobs which are part time. That’s the reason most women return to their own jobs after mat leave, even if they’re working for peanuts after nursery fees. It’s easier to negotiate part time at that point when you’re returning and they already know you.

Your best bet is to apply for full time jobs that look like there may be scope for part time. If you’re offered it you can ask about possibility of part time but be prepared they may say no. Or else start a job full time and then once you’re fully settled in and they see how good you are in the role you could apply for reduced hours.

@Appleberrybloom do you mean £40k FTE or a part time salary of £40? What industry do you work in?

MignonsMorceaux · 08/05/2025 11:27

I've applied to FT and asked for PT and got it. Depends on the industry, and how many good candidates they are likely to have, but always worth a try of the job seems a good fit.

If they give a contact for questions when applying, it might be worth asking informally if it's possible. Then make it clear when you apply what FTE you are able/ offering. No point in misleading anyone.

I phoned the recruiting manager when I saw the role advertised, and asked whether there was any way it could be done at 80% rather than 100%. He agreed it probably could, with a bit of flexibility, and one eye on his budgets (NHS).

Thanks for everyone's comments. To clarify 40k FTE. I'd rather not say industry as a bit outing. I have been limiting myself to roles which are advertised as part time, so it's good to hear others have had success negotiating a full time position down to a part time one.

Any luck OP?
I am in the same situation and interested to hear how they take it if you are offered the position and then try to negotiate to 4 days rather than being ruled out from the start

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 18/06/2025 13:22

If you're up for 4 days/0.8FTE, just apply to FT roles and then discuss when you get to offer stage. I have a 100% success rate so far with this.

Anything less than 0.8 is likely to be a lot trickier.

Hello! I've not had any luck applying for full time positions and negotiating down. I feel as though I am perceived as a time waster and some people have completely ghosted me as soon as it's mentioned! I was fortunate enough to come across a role with a ftse 100 on 60% FTE which I'm now in final stages for - so they do exist!
